Career

Jan Holpert began playing handball at TSV Glücksburg 09 and succeeded via TSB Flensburg in 1986 to TSV Milbertshofen , where he played his first Bundesliga game on September 13, 1986. With TSV Milbertshofen, he won the DHB Cup against THW Kiel in 1990 and was also German runner-up. In 1991 he won the European Cup Winners' Cup with Milbertshofen against Bidasoa Irún . The following year he was again in the final of the European Cup Winners' Cup with TSV, but KC Veszprém was able to win the final.

Since the bankruptcy of TSV Milbertshofen in 1993, Jan Holpert played for SG Flensburg-Handewitt . There he was, together with Lars Christiansen and Johnny Jensen, one of the identifying figures for Flensburg handball fans.

The seven-meter killer celebrated his first major success with SG Flensburg-Handewitt in 1997 when SG won the EHF Cup against the Danish club Virum-Sorgefri HK . With the City Cup 1999 and the European Cup Winners' Cup in 2001, two further European titles followed.

After Holpert won the DHB Cup with Flensburg-Handewitt in 2003, he was able to win the German championship for the first time in 2004 - in addition to another cup success - after five runners-up with the SG. In addition, the double winner was in the final of the Champions League , but they were left behind against RK Celje .

By defending the DHB Cup in 2005, Holpert won his last title. In 2005 and 2006 he was again runner-up. In 2007 he was in the final of the Champions League again, but lost there in the local derby against THW Kiel.

In December 2006, Holpert announced that he would not renew his contract and end his career after the season. He played his farewell game on June 3, 2007 in the campus hall . On June 5, 2007 he again guarded the goal of the all-star team for the 2006/07 season . During this event, he and Stefan Kretzschmar were honored for his “life's work”.

On October 11, 2007 Jan Holpert made his comeback in the Champions League against MKS Zagłębie Lubin, as Dan Beutler was injured.

He played 245 international matches for the German national team . His greatest success was 3rd place at the 1998 European Championship . After he had already ended his international playing career, he was again included in the extended national squad before the 2007 World Cup due to injury concerns, but was later not part of the World Cup squad.

With his agency for communication "Strandhütte" Holpert supported the marketing department of SG Flensburg-Handewitt from the beginning of the 2006/07 season to the end of the 2013/14 season. Furthermore, he stayed with the SG after his career as a goalkeeper coach.
