The Schwarzbachwacht , also popularly known as “Wachterl”, is a mountain pass located 868 m high in Ramsau near Berchtesgaden ( Berchtesgadener Land district ) in the Berchtesgaden Alps , named after the Schwarzbach, which rises 500 meters to the west . The part of the name "Wacht" goes back to the border fortifications at the time of the imperial provost of Berchtesgaden .

geography

The pass between the Lattengebirge in the north and the Reiter Alpe in the southwest connects the valley of the Schwarzbach , a side valley of the Saalach in Schneizlreuth , in the northwest with the valley of the Lattenbach , a side valley of the Ramsauer Ache in Ramsau near Berchtesgaden , in the southeast. To the north-east of the Schwarzbachwachtsattel is the Karspitz ( 1640  m ), to the southwest of the Edelweißlahnerkopf ( 1953  m ). Over the saddle, which is located in the Berchtesgaden Biosphere Reserve , the B 305 forms a section of the German Alpine Road and the German Alpine-Baltic Sea Holiday Route .

history

The Schwarzbachwacht formed a border of the prince provost of Berchtesgaden - hence the name component "Wacht". After the territory of the prince-provost, which was independent until 1803, became part of the Kingdom of Bavaria in 1810 after a few changes , the pass was the most important transport link to the neighboring kingdom.

The brine pipeline from Berchtesgaden to Bad Reichenhall , which was built in 1817, also ran over the Schwarzbachwacht and not over the lower Hallthurm pass , as the Hallthurmer Spitz , an area strip that belonged to Austria until 1851, had to be crossed there. Then the Hallthurm developed into an expanded main traffic connection to Bavaria. Only since 1961 has the new brine pipeline been running over the Hallthurm.

Windthrow damage from Kyrill

Storm damage and protective fence in the white wall area ( B 305 )

The pass road was - between the Gasthof Wachterl (Ramsau) and the junction to Oberjettenberg - after the hurricane Kyrill on 18/19. Closed from January 1st to July 4th, 2007 in order to be able to deal with the large wind throws above the road. It is likely to have been the longest closure of a traffic route caused by Kyrill. The storm raged on approx. 65 ha and destroyed spruce stands that were up to 200 years old. For the most part, the wood could only be removed with the help of helicopters, since the area is almost inaccessible to vehicles. Shortly afterwards, a rockfall protection fence was erected to protect against the increased risk of falling rocks caused by the wind throws .

reception

The painter Louis Braun recorded the pass with the inn in a painting around 1876.
