Horst Spengler (born February 10, 1950 in Gießen-Lützellinden ) is a former German handball player and coach . He played for TV Hüttenberg and was the captain of the German national handball team . Today he is a sports advisor for the Bundesliga club HSG Wetzlar .

Career

Horst Spengler, son of the former German handball player and handball trainer Rudolf Spengler , is a former German handball player and handball trainer. He began his career at TV Lützellinden and then moved to the neighboring Bundesliga club at that time, TV Hüttenberg , where he worked for a total of 15 years as a circle runner and player- coach and ended his career in 1983.

Horst Spengler finished fourth with the German team at the 1976 Olympic Games . On February 5, 1978 in Copenhagen he won the world championship title in the final against the USSR as captain of the German national handball team . The national coach at the time was Vlado Stenzel , Horst's father Rudolf Spengler , assistant coach . As a national player , Spengler made a total of 147 appearances in which he scored 293 goals.

Trainer

As a coach , he led both SG Wallau / Massenheim and HSG Dutenhofen / Münchholzhausen (now HSG Wetzlar ) in the 1st Bundesliga. He was also the coach of the regional league team TV Lützellinden in the early 1990s. He trained the juniors for the German Handball Federation.

Private

From the end of his handball career to summer 2015, Horst Spengler worked as a teacher for sports, mathematics and physics at the Johanneum-Gymnasium in Herborn . The senior teacher is married and has two daughters.

For the handball world championship 2007 in Germany Spengler was officially appointed World Cup ambassador for the city of Wetzlar , which was one of the host cities of the World Cup.

Honors

Spengler's home town Hüttenberg honored him by naming a street after him during his lifetime, the Horst-Spengler-Ring in the Hochelheim district.

In June 2015 Horst Spengler and his father were awarded the Hessian Order of Merit on ribbon by the Hessian Prime Minister Volker Bouffier .
