The Herford City Library is the main municipal library in the East Westphalian city of Herford in North Rhine-Westphalia . In the Erich-Gutenberg-Haus on Linnenbauerplatz in the center of Herford, it provides a wide range of over 80,000 media on three floors for work, further education, leisure and entertainment for lending and on-site use.
history
In 1896 the city library was founded as the “Municipal Public Library and Reading Hall” on Wilhelmsplatz with a stock of 180 volumes.
After moving several times, the library was reopened in 1962 as an open access library in the new rooms of the high-rise office building on Berliner Strasse under the new management of graduate librarian Wilhelm Neumann.
In 1982 the city library with a stock of 42,000 volumes moved to its current location in the factory building of the former Kopka furniture factory at Linnenbauerplatz 6, which was built in 1885 and was added to the Herford 's list of monuments in 1981 . In 1998 the building was named Erich-Gutenberg-Haus in memory of the Herford-born business economist Erich Gutenberg .
In 2004 the readers' cafe “Leselust” opened on the ground floor and in 2011 the box office and tourist information moved into the building. The tourist information moved to the small market hall on Rathausplatz in 2019 .

Events and collaborations
The city library offers numerous events throughout the year. This includes, for example, readings, eBook consultation hours and reading activities for children.
In keeping with its mission statement, it cooperates with numerous associations and companies. These include, among others, the Herford Civic Foundation , the Chancereich eV association, EMMA, the Erich Gutenberg Society, the study institute of the Fern-Uni Hagen and the adult education center in the Herford district.
There is also an association called Buch.Bar .
