History and description

View from the southwest

The multi-storey stone house at Höckerstraße 4 was built in 1538 for the mayor of Herford New Town , Heinrich Crüwell . On the west side there is a Gothic stepped gable with pointed arches , tracery and pinnacles . The pinnacle gables in Münster (e.g. Prinzipalmarkt 11), built in the second half of the 15th century, and the Crüwellhaus in Bielefeld , built around 1530, served as models .

There is an inscription above the windows on the first floor. Translated it reads: God for praise, the city of Herford for the glory and benefit of the people built in the year of the Lord in 1538.

The mayor's house has been a listed building since 1981 .

Individual evidence

  1. Cf. Karl E. Mummenhoff: Profane buildings of the Westphalian gentry. In: Der Raum Westfalen, Volume IV / 2, Münster 1965, pages 238–39. Mummenhoff describes the successor buildings that were built in Bielefeld, Herford and Lemgo, which also include the Herford mayor's house, as copies of the Munster special group of "younger pinnacles". The facade of the Munster town hall, which was built much earlier, can therefore be ruled out as a direct model.
