Bibi Blocksberg is the name of a children's radio play series from the Kiddinx label , which was launched in 1980 by Elfie Donnelly . The main character is the girl Bibi Blocksberg, who is a witch .

So far (as of July 2020) 134 episodes have appeared. The radio play series was originally called Eene meene Hexerei . Only the first seven episodes appeared under this title, then the series was renamed Bibi Blocksberg . The first episodes were later released under the new title and with a new cover. The length of a single Bibi Blocksberg episode used to vary between 35 and 40 minutes and is now between 40 and 45. The target group of the radio play series are children between four and ten years of age.

In the series, Bibi, who is always in the mood for pranks, experiences numerous adventures with her friends Marita, Florian and Moni. Often there are also witchcraft involved, which not infrequently lead to complications that then have to be straightened out again by their mother, who is also a witch. Bibi's opponent is usually the mayor of the city of Neustadt, who is portrayed as lazy, incompetent and obedient to business. This means that conflicts with the helpful Bibi are programmed.

Bibi's surname refers to the old name of the Brocken ( Blocksberg ), which is traditionally associated with witches ( Walpurgis Night ) , including in Goethe's Faust .

characters

Bibi

Bibi (eigtl. Brigitte) is a witch girl who is often depicted with blonde hair tied with a red bow in a ponytail, a dress in her favorite color green as well as with white socks and without shoes. She is twelve years old in the first twelve radio play episodes and has since been described as a 13-year-old girl. Bibi is only too happy to use her initially untrained witchcraft to play pranks on others. Not only the mayor, but also the school principal, her class teacher and many other Neustadt citizens are often involved in the crazy witchcraft. Her favorite means of transportation is her broom mashed potatoes , which she uses to fly with witchcrafts like “Eene meene mei, fly away mashed potatoes!”, “Eene meene mei, mashed potatoes be my plane!” Or “Eene meene nestle, mashed potatoes, go, fly!” brings. The journalist Karla Kolumna often reports on Bibi's pranks and actions in the local newspaper. Little Blocksberg is not only equipped with a weakness for jokes, but also with a big heart. In many episodes she rises to be the savior of the citizens of Neustadt and is always trying to eliminate injustices and disadvantages from the world.

Bibi's family

Bernhard and Barbara Blocksberg are Bibi's parents. Barbara is also a witch who flies to Blocksberg on her valerian broom every year on Walpurgis Night. At first she doesn't even see how to cook normal food or even do witches, which is why she always gets angry when the others criticize her spider-leg soup again. She doesn't even like her dishes herself, she just wants to prevent her from forgetting the old witch's cooking skills. In the first episode, the first edition Eene meene witchcraft under the title Can Blocksbergs witch? appeared, one learns by the way that she likes to eat yeast dumplings with poppy seeds and sugar and four-minute eggs for breakfast for her entire life . When Barbara has enough of her family again, she flies to her friend. She has a witch's laboratory in which she often tries to brew sulfur-smelling potions and experiments with herbs and witchcraft. In spite of her and Bibi's extraordinary talent, she always tries to ensure a reasonably “normal” life in the Blocksberg household; She has issued many rules such as not to fly in through the window, not to fly to school with a broom and only to witch in emergencies, which of course are often ignored. She also keeps reminding her impetuous daughter of the witches' code of honor, which forbids, for example, to witch money.

Bernhard cannot do witchcraft, which, by the way, almost exclusively women can do (a - very rare - exception is Carlo, who appears in episode 17). He wants a completely normal family, as he emphasizes in almost every episode. He often forbids Bibi and his wife Barbara to do witches so that they don't attract attention. Actually he is proud of "his" witches. One of his favorite pastimes is reading the “Neustädter Tageblatt” every morning. Although Bernhard and Barbara often quarrel and he keeps yelling: "I'm getting a divorce!" (More in the earlier episodes that were still written by Elfie Donnelly), they both love each other very much. In episode 3 you learn, however, that generally arguments at the Blocksbergs only last a maximum of 25 seconds.

The first seven episodes also feature Boris, Bibi's little brother. He's often quite jealous of his sister's witchcraft, which leads to one or another quarrel between the two. In episode 2 it is mentioned that he is eight years old, and in episode 9 the listener learns that he moved to live with his grandparents in the North Sea. The reason given is that he has a cough and that the fresh sea air would do him good. He never shows up again. Even at Christmas and Easter, the family no longer thinks about Boris. Bibi seems to have completely forgotten about him as a babysitter when she wanted siblings. In addition, Bernhard says in the episode Die Computerhexe that the family consists of only three people.

Grandma Grete

Grandma Grete is Barbara's mother. She is rather unconventional and gets along great with her granddaughter Bibi. You can hear from her for the first time in episode 22 3 × black tomcat , in which she gives the Blocksbergs her witch tomcat Sylvester as a pet. She does not appear regularly until episode 82. Your broom is called saffron . Grandma Grete does not have the surname Blocksberg, which becomes clear in the episode "Unexpected Reunion". In this, a relative of Bernhard's named Luisa Blocksberg appears, which is why it must be assumed that Barbara took the name of her husband after the wedding.

Monika Seifert

Moni is Bibi's best friend. She first appears in episode 10 when she comes into Bibi's class. At first it is unpopular. She is often unfriendly to her classmates and because of this and because of her clothes is labeled a country pomeranian. Only when Bibi learns that Moni's parents are very mean to her, Bibi decides to help her, and the two become close friends. In the more recent episodes, Moni is rarely there, and Marita is now more of Bibi's best friend.

Marita Mertens (also Marita Schuller and Marita Kellermann)

Marita later becomes Bibi's best friend. It appears for the first time in episode 19. The two girls don't like each other at first, and they argue and abuse each other all the time, but then they become pretty close friends. Marita appears often in later episodes and has many exciting adventures with Bibi. Marita's parents own a fashion store in Neustadt.

Florian

Florian is Bibi's best friend, a computer genius and math ace. He helps her, for example, to get the dinosaur to hatch from the dinosaur egg, to keep her from sitting down through tutoring and to survive some other adventures. In radio drama, Bibi usually just calls him “Flori”.

Mayor Dr. Dr. Bruno (formerly Hugo) press bag

The mayor of Neustadt often makes many promises, but in the end he is always out for money. He has a speech impediment as soon as he sees Bibi “Blocksbergi” because she once bewitched him. He is portrayed as very dominant and often behaves roughly towards his secretary Pichler. He owes his unrestrained appetite for a stately appearance with a very big belly. In places he lapses into megalomania, for example in episode 64 The New School , in which he wants to have a new town hall built in the form of a castle, or in episode 63 The Fortune Teller , in which he lets a fortune teller bring him to the future To see King of Neustadt and to order a royal robe and a scepter. It is also characteristic of him that he often mistakenly calls Neustadt's citizens his “subjects”. In general, you can describe him as a somewhat stupid figure: Little effort and maximum profit as well as putting his own importance or his own position in front of that of the citizens of Neustadt characterize his character. Nevertheless, it has a good core, even if it is deeply hidden.

Secretary Paul Pichler

Mr. Pichler is the secretary of Mayor Dr. Dr. Bruno Presssack. Paul Pichler is a friendly and good-natured person who accepts the rough tone of the mayor. In the episode Bibi is kidnapped , he tells Bibi that his name is Palle Pichler .

Karla Kolumna

Karla Kolumna is the so-called mad reporter , always looking for a big story. She gets on well with the Blocksberg family and often helps them. As her nickname suggests, she often races around, mostly on her scooter. Her shrill voice and frequent loud laughter are particularly significant. She often gets into an argument with the mayor because she criticizes his behavior. Karla Kolumna also appears with Benjamin Blümchen .

Schubia bug hair

Schubia Wanzhaar is a cheeky little punk witch. She has green hair and a noisy motor broom named Kawakasi . She usually has difficulties with her witch teacher, Aunt Mania. Although she is cocky at times, she is a real friend of Bibi. From the outside it looks quite rough, but has a soft core and a big heart. She is dressed like a punk and always has burgundy lipstick on.

Flauipaui

Flauipaui is a witch friend of Bibi and Schubia. She attaches great importance to her appearance, always has to comb her hair and look at herself in the mirror. She is delicate and petite, and also very timid. She is often afraid of her witch teacher Aunt Mania because she never understands her homework. But she can be very brave in dangerous situations. She attends witchcraft school with Schubia Wanzhaar and Bibi Blocksberg. Your witch's broom is called Daisy . Schubia often mockingly calls it the flower pot . Whether this is really her last name (since Schubia always addresses Bibi as Blocksberg ) has not yet been mentioned.

Xenia

Xenia is also a young witch and Bibi's friend. It appears only rarely in the radio play series. Xenia is very committed to nature conservation and is interested in animals. Your broom is called Woodie .

Arcadia

Arkadia is another young witch who is friends with Bibi. She is mainly interested in disco music. Her broom is called Fetzi .

The thunderstorms

Cecily Thunderstorm is Bibi's aunt from Ireland and also a witch. She appears for the first time in episode 8, and also in episodes 36, 82 and 98. She is married to Patrick Thunderstorm, who cannot witch. Her daughter Margie doesn't get along with Bibi at first. After Bibi learns about the cost problems with the castle, she helps Margie and the two become friends. Margie's broom is called cornflake , Cecily's broom is called "porridge".

Joachim Buschberg

Joachim is Bibi's first great love. He appears in episodes 9, 12 and 17. Bibi tries everything to make Joachim fall in love with her. But Joachim is not in love with Bibi, no matter what she does. Then she bewitches him with an ancient love spell, and Joachim then does everything to charm Bibi. But that will be too much for Bibi and Barbara has to hex Joachim back again. After the incident, Joachim wants to go home straight away, but then he finally talks to the Blocksberg family and finds everything quite exciting. Bibi and Joachim then become very good friends.

Mania flippinger

Aunt Mania, as she is almost always called, is the oldest witch. It maintains tradition and likes to scare other people, but it has changed in the meantime and is rarely inclined to do so. She teaches Bibi and her friends in the witch school. She has twelve brooms, owls and cats each, and a raven named Abraxas .

Amanda sulfur vapor

Aunt Amanda and Bibi's mother Barbara attended the witch school, where they both had Mania as a teacher. When Barbara is on the cure in episodes 53 and 54, she keeps an eye on Bibi and Bernhard. Your broom is named Lumpazi .

Walpurgia broomstick

Walpurgia presides over the Witches Association and, like Mania, is careful to ensure that the rules are followed. She is also the director of a witch boarding school, to which Bibi and her friends are sent in episode 77. Your broom is called Belladonna .

Mathilde Müller-Riebensehl

Bibi's class and math teacher is not really popular with her students. However, the rather strict Ms. Müller-Riebensehl sometimes also shows a soft core, e.g. B. in the episode The Class Trip . She is also the deputy head of the school.

Martin family

Bibi meets Tina Martin in episodes 43 and 44 (two-part episode), whereupon they become friends. Then the radio play series Bibi and Tina was created . Tina's mother owns a riding stables. The horses Bibi and Tina always ride are called Amadeus and Sabrina . There are now 97 episodes of the radio play series.

Laurenzo family

Carlo and his mother Maria only appear in episode 17. Although it is often mentioned that only women can witch, Carlo is a little witcher. Bibi and Carlo get to know each other at the soccer tournament in their two schools and quickly become friends. After this episode, he and his mother never appear again and are no longer mentioned. You don't learn anything about Carlo's father, you only learn that Carlo has six older brothers. His broom is called Tarantella , that of his mother Eusebio .

Accurata

Akkurata is an official test witch from the Hexschulamt and takes Bibi and Xenia the test for the middle hex degree in episode 113.

Malizia

Malizia is a wicked witch who regularly violates various hex commandments and has often been given hex bans. She is not in a particularly good position to Bibi and her mother and tries to wipe them out in the episodes in which she appears (e.g. in the episode Die Klassenreise or Mami in Not ). Otherwise it is not very common. She also owns a black cockatoo named Kuriosus . Your broom is called Toxicater .

speaker

Of the speakers from the very beginning, only Susanna Bonaséwicz is still there as Bibi, after the speakers of Bibi's parents, Guido Weber and Hallgard Bruckhaus , gave up their roles in 2008 due to their advanced age and were replaced by Bodo Wolf and Gabriele Streichhahn from episode 93 . The character Karla Kolumna was adapted due to the aging voice of Gisela Fritsch and has since been less cranked than at the beginning. Gisela Fritsch died in July 2013. Heinz Giese also voted for Mayor Bruno Presssack for 27 years before he retired after the 88th episode and Roland Hemmo took over his role. Wilfried Herbst was also heard from Bibi Blocksberg from the beginning, but only since episode 32 in a permanent role as Secretary Pichler. Herbst retired in March 2020, from episode 132 the role of Secretary Pichler will be spoken by Stefan Krause .

All other characters have been replaced by new speakers earlier over the years.

Frank Schaff , who speaks in the first seven episodes of Bibi's brother Boris, has a guest appearance 30 years later and episode 106 30 years later.

Adaptations

Bibi Blocksberg lives in Neustadt like the talking elephant Benjamin Blümchen . The name of the city is already mentioned in the first episode, the connection between the two rows is then made in episode 2 ("Witchcraft in the School"), when Bibi hatches a trunk to her teacher, who gives the school principal to the elephant from Neustädter Zoo remembers. This is called Benjamin Blümchen. From this episode onwards, the two rows share core characters such as the mayor, secretary Pichler and the reporter Karla Kolumna. Repeated references are made to the other row in both series. In addition, Bibi and Benjamin experience joint adventures in several episodes - which then almost or without exception officially belong to the Benjamin Blümchen series - for the first time in the Benjamin Blümchen radio play series "Benjamin Blümchen and Bibi Blocksberg". In the same series universe, but not in the same city, the branch Elea Eluanda plays . The main character Elea lives in Altenberg, a place in the mountains. Elea appears both in the episode "Bibi Blocksberg and Elea Eluanda" and in the film "Bibi Blocksberg and the secret of the blue owls".

Books

Bibi Blocksberg's books are published by Schneiderbuch . So far 37 individual titles as well as several anthologies, special volumes and the book about the Bibi Blocksberg film have been published there: Bibi Blocksberg and the secret of the blue owls .

There used to be an instrumental intro. The new radio play cassettes have a sung theme song. The title melody was written by Heiko Rüsse . From episode 83 there is a new intro, written by Wolfgang W. Loos and Heiko Rüsse.

Political and social science investigation of radio plays

Gerd Andreas Strohmeier from the University of Passau (now working at the University of Chemnitz) discusses in an article in the specialist publication From Politics and Contemporary History " the importance of the question of [...] conveyed content and its influence on the socialization process of children " using the example of the radio play series by Benjamin Blümchen and Bibi Blocksberg.

The author is of the opinion that the above-mentioned radio play series hardly promoted, if not hindered, the development of politically mature citizens. This is justified by the " (presumably intended) conveyance of explicit political content ". The reasoning is based on the description of the socialization process in general and of political socialization as a subset of (general) socialization in particular, according to which the socializing effect of children's radio plays is often completely underestimated or completely ignored. It is emphasized that terms such as politics, police, media etc. are well presented, but are often distorted and / or have a negative connotation compared to reality .

The article closes with the remark that children would “ by no means only hear funny stories of a talking elephant and a little witch ” and the advice to pay more attention to the meta-level of the stories. The author bases his position on the principles of political education. In his résumé he comes to the conclusion that the series has a "left alternative" tendency.

Kerstin Wolff - consultant at the archive of the German women's movement in Kassel - by no means comes to such a clear conclusion. She notes a more conservative family image and little questioned gender roles. This contrasts with the paths of participation shown and the issues of a political awakening as a framework in the time the series of radio plays was created.

Ina Schenker also positions Bibi Blocksberg as a " controversial figure " and refers in this connection to a gap in the academic reception: " So far, the problematization that this female emancipation, which is viewed as positive, often operates at the expense of deferred mechanisms of oppression has found little input in research . The raised voice of the female heroine Bibi Blocksberg is placed above the suppressed voice of a post-colonial subaltern. "
