Gerd Strohmeier

Gerd Andreas Strohmeier (born April 22, 1975 in Simbach am Inn ) is a German political scientist and political advisor . He has been Rector of the Technical University of Chemnitz since October 1st, 2016 . Among other things, he is an expert for the German Bundestag .

Life

Strohmeier completed an apprenticeship as an industrial clerk from 1991 to 1994 and an editorial traineeship at radio in 1994. From 1996 to 1999 he studied political science, psychology and sociology at the University of Passau (MA). Strohmeier was a scholarship holder of the Hanns Seidel Foundation (focus: promoting young journalists). He became a research assistant at the Chair of Political Science (Professorship Winand Gellner ) and in 2001 he was awarded a Dr. phil. PhD. In 2004 he completed his habilitation and was awarded the venia legendi for political science. In 2003 and 2014 he was a visiting scholar / professor / fellow a. a. at Wolfson College of the University of Cambridge (England) and in 2003 and 2013 a. a. at Van Mildert College of the University of Durham (England) and 2004 at the University of Wrocław (Poland). From 2004 to 2008 he worked as a private lecturer at the University of Passau. In 2008 he represented the professorship for European systems of government in comparison at the TU Chemnitz , in 2009 he became professor.

From 2001 to 2007, Strohmeier and Winand Gellner edited the yearbook Politics in the Net . Together with Roland Sturm and Eckhard Jesse , he supervised the Chemnitz doctoral college “Political and Party Development in Europe” from 2008 to 2011 and, together with Ludwig Hilmer, from 2011 to 2014 the doctoral college “Media Policy in International Comparison”. He was also a lecturer at the Paris Lodron University of Salzburg and the University of the Federal Armed Forces in Munich . Since 2011 he has also worked as an expert (including committees of the Bundestag and the Saxon state parliament) and acted as a consultant and a. in the Myanmar parliament and the Austrian National Council .

His research interests are government and electoral systems, media and political communication, defense policy and internal security; He was involved in several research projects, consulting projects and research contracts from government agencies, foundations and associations.

On June 14, 2016, Strohmeier was elected by the Extended Senate of Chemnitz University of Technology to succeed Arnold van Zyl as Rector. He prevailed against the prorector and acting incumbent Andreas Schubert . He took office on October 1, 2016.
