Life

Van Zyl studied chemical engineering at the University of Cape Town and received his PhD in engineering in 1987 . This was followed by stays abroad in Germany, Belgium and the USA. From 1987 to 1990 he worked at the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research in Stuttgart . He then moved to the automobile manufacturer Daimler AG , for which he held managerial positions in research and development in Stuttgart, Ulm and Brussels . From 2001 to 2007 he was the head of various professional associations representing the interests of the European automotive sector in San Diego and Brussels. From 2008 to 2012 van Zyl was Vice President for Research and Innovation at the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa and at the same time Professor in the Faculty of Engineering.

On October 18, 2011 he was elected in the third ballot to succeed Klaus-Jürgen Matthes as rector of the TU Chemnitz. 29 members of the Extended Senate voted for him, while his opponent Wolfram Hardt received 19 votes. He took office on April 1, 2012.

On September 25, 2015, he was elected to succeed Reinhold R. Geilsdörfer as President of the Baden-Württemberg Cooperative State University . He started his term of office, limited to 6 years, on February 1, 2016. Van Zyl justified his departure from Chemnitz because he sees his room for maneuver as rector reduced by the requirements of the Saxon university policy, which provides for a reduction in the number of students at the TU Chemnitz by a fifth and a reduction in the number of courses.

In 2007 he was awarded honorary professorships from Tongji University in China and Stellenbosch University . He is a member of the Academy of Science of South Africa and a Fellow of the South African Academy of Engineering. He is a member of the boards of trustees of the Fraunhofer Institute for Machine Tools and Forming Technology and the Fraunhofer Institute for Electronic Nano Systems ENAS . The list of his publications includes 69 patents.
