Klaus-Jürgen Matthes (born September 27, 1945 in Meerane ) is a German engineer and university professor. From 2003 to 2011 he was rector of the TU Chemnitz .

Live and act

Between 1964 and 1969, Matthes studied mechanical engineering at the TH Karl-Marx-Stadt specializing in welding technology . By 1971 he continued his research studies, which he completed with a doctorate on the subject of rationalization of the technological production preparation of the work “arc fusion welding” through the use of electronic data processing . He then became a scientific assistant and senior assistant in the scientific field of joining technology and assembly. Between 1976 and 1977 he worked briefly at the welding technology chair at the Zhdanov Metallurgical Institute in Ukraine . In 1985 he wrote his dissertation B on the subject of technological basics for the automation of the welding process and its application in medium-active gas welding , which was officially recognized as a habilitation in 1991 after the political change . He then headed the research group at IFA engineering company Hohenstein-Ernstthal until he was appointed lecturer for process automation of welding technology at the Technical University of Karl-Marx-Stadt in 1987. In 1989 he was appointed full professor for welding technology. Since 1992 he has held the professorship for welding technology within the institute for production engineering and welding technology.

Over the years he has held various offices within the academic self-government. Between 1994 and 1997 he was Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical and Process Engineering and was then elected Vice-Rector for Research . Since October 1st, 2003 he has been the rector of the TU Chemnitz. On December 1, 2010 he took over the chairmanship of the Saxon State Rectors' Conference. His second term of office as rector would have expired on September 30, 2009, but was extended by more than two years due to transitional provisions following the introduction of a new Saxon higher education law, the associated establishment of new university bodies and delays at the TU Chemnitz. The term of office finally ended on October 18, 2011 with the election of Arnold van Zyl as his successor.

On May 23, 2004, he took part in the 12th Federal Assembly for the election of the German Federal President as a representative of the Saxon CDU .

Matthes is an elected appraiser of the AiF , special appraiser of the German Research Foundation and is a member and chairman of several boards of technical associations, research centers as well as supervisory boards of companies of technology transfer and research GmbHs.

Matthes is married and has two children.
