Christian Weißmantel (born December 9, 1931 in Kamenz ; † September 16, 1987 in Karl-Marx-Stadt ) was a German physicist , rector of the University of Mechanical Engineering in Karl-Marx-Stadt and a member of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR .

After studying physics from 1950 to 1955 at the TH Dresden , he worked as an assistant to Kurt Schwabe until his doctorate in 1958 . He then accepted an assistant position at the Institute for Electrochemistry and Physical Chemistry at the TU Dresden and completed his habilitation in 1963 with a thesis in the field of physical chemistry in experimental physics . He then became professor of physics at the Karl-Marx-Stadt University of Mechanical Engineering (today: Chemnitz University of Technology ), where he taught and researched for more than 24 years. From 1969 to 1973 he was the rector of this university . In 1973, Weissmantel first became a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR, until he was finally made a full member in 1976 . From 1976 to 1977 he accepted a visiting professorship at the University of Paris-Süd , and in 1985 a visiting professorship at the University of Limoges .
In 1970 Weißmantel received the National Prize of the GDR III. Class, 1973 the Patriotic Order of Merit in bronze and 1980 in silver and in 1984 the Karl Marx Order .
