The Fraunhofer Institute for Electronic Nano Systems ENAS , or Fraunhofer ENAS for short , is an institution of the Fraunhofer Society . The seat is in Chemnitz , there is a branch in Paderborn . It was founded on July 1, 2008 as the Fraunhofer Institute for Electronic Nano Systems (ENAS) and the transformation into an institute on January 1, 2011.
history
In 1993, with the establishment of the Fraunhofer Institute for Reliability and Microintegration IZM in Berlin, a project group was established in Chemnitz under the direction of Bernd Michel. In 1998, the “Micro Devices and Equipment” department was founded under the direction of Thomas Geßner . The development was positive, so that in 2003 the department in Chemnitz became part of the Fraunhofer IZM and from 2006 received its own cost center. In 2006 the “Micro Materials Center” (Chemnitz) and “Advanced System Engineering” (Paderborn) departments were integrated into the Chemnitz branch. In the same year the board of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft decided to build a building for the Chemnitz branch. Two years later, the “Back-end of Line” and “Printed Functionalities” departments were founded. On July 1, 2008, the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft stepped up its activities on nanotechnology in Saxony with the transfer of the Chemnitz branch of the Fraunhofer Institute for Reliability and Microintegration to the Fraunhofer Institute for Electronic Nano Systems ENAS. On June 22nd, 2009, the new Fraunhofer ENAS building in Chemnitz was inaugurated and in July of the same year the “System Packaging” department was founded. On January 1, 2011, the Fraunhofer facility was transformed into the Fraunhofer Institute for Electronic Nano Systems.
