John Ulam

John Bernard Ulam (born April 18, 1924 in Mount Lebanon , Allegheny County , Pennsylvania , † February 1, 1989 in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania) was an American metallurgist and entrepreneur.

Life

His parents were Frederick Anthony Ulam (1886-1946) and Eleanor Frances Barrett (1887-1975). He was from Peters, Washington County . From 1943 to 1945 he served in the United States Army Air Corps . In 1948 he graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a degree in metallurgy.

In 1958 he founded Composite Metal Products Inc. , which produced sandwich metals. In the early 1960s in Canonsburg he developed a patented roll-bonding process for the production of solid metal connections. In 1968 the Composite Metal Products Inc. was owned by the Chas. Pfizer & Co., Inc. acquired.

In 1971 he founded in Canonsburg which Clad Metals Inc. , the first company in the world, the high-quality multi-layer cookware produced. In November 1988 he became a president to retire and sold the company to the annealing Box Co . He applied for 25 patents.

John B. Ulam died on February 1, 1989 at Shadysite Hospital in Pittsburgh at the age of 64. He had three sons with his wife Patricia Durkin.
