Nieuwstadt ( Dutch with -dt , Limburgish De Nuujsjtadt ) is a historic small town with currently 3,240 inhabitants in the Dutch province of Limburg , located between the Meuse and the German Selfkant area at the narrowest part of the kingdom, only 5 km wide. In 1982 Nieuwstadt was incorporated into Susteren and since 2003 it has been the southernmost of the eleven settlement centers in the community of Echt-Susteren . Nieuwstadt has an impressive number of twin cities through the Neustadt network in Europe .

history

Just like the name, the regular road network refers to a planned new facility . After the granting of city rights by Count Otto II (Geldern) in 1263, the town was fortified with a wall and moat. A document written in Latin in 1277 names the city (probably in the genitive ) Vill (a) e Nov (a) e apud Elsene . It is not known where the older neighboring town of Elsen or Helsen may have been. The Liège prince-bishop Heinrich III. von Geldern (1245–1285) inherited Nieuwstadt together with his seat Montfort to his nephew Rainald I von Geldern . In his rhyming chronicle of the battle of Worringen , Jan van Heelu mentioned around 1292 that this duke retired to “his fortress of the new city” ( ter Nuwer Stat ) in 1286 .

In 1583 the fortifications were razed, but Nieuwstadt retained its town charter. It was subordinate to the Obergelder Office of Montfort . It remained part of Spanish funds until 1715 . The demarcation between Prussia and the United Netherlands at the Congress of Vienna in 1815 increased the city's land holdings to include part of the grounds of Millen Castle, including the castle buildings and the flour mill. The oil mill on the other side of the newly defined Grenzbach came to Prussia.
