Derrick Bernard Favors (born July 15, 1991 in Atlanta , Georgia , United States ) is an American basketball player who has played in the National Basketball Association since February 2011 and is currently under contract with the New Orleans Pelicans .
High school and college
Derrick Favors was featured on many talent lists as the Greatest High School Talent of 2009. He won the regional state championship as a player with the South Atlanta High School in 2009, as well as many junior awards including MVP awards at the Jordan Brand Classic 2009 in Madison Square Garden , and at the McDonald's All-American Game 2009. Accordingly, there were many universities that tried to to win him for their basketball team. Despite numerous offers, Favors chose the nearby Georgia Institute of Technology . After a good freshman season, for which he was named ACC Freshman Of The Year , Favors signed up for the 2010 NBA draft .
NBA
Rookie year (2010-11)
Even in the run-up to the NBA draft , Favors was considered a great talent who was reminiscent of Dwight Howard due to his physical requirements and style of play . In the 2010 NBA Draft, he was selected third by the New Jersey Nets . He was nominated for the rookie selection as part of the 2011 NBA All-Star Weekend . On February 23, 2011 he and his teammate Devin Harris were transferred to the Utah Jazz for Deron Williams . For his solid performance, which he completed with 6.8 points and 5.3 rebounds per game, he was elected to the second NBA all-rookie team at the end of the season .
Sophomore and third NBA year (2011-13)
In his sophomore year, Favors increased his statistical values and, coming from the bank, relieved the starters Al Jefferson and Paul Millsap . Again he was called to the now reformed BBVA Rising Stars Challenge of the best rookies and sophomores . Also in the third year, Favors lined up behind Jefferson and Millsap. Nevertheless, he was able to improve his statistics further. Especially in defense, Favors developed further and led Jazz with 1.7 blocks per game. On October 19, 2013, Favors signed a new contract with Jazz. This guarantees him 49 million US dollars for the next four years.
Promotion to regular player in jazz (2013-19)
After Jefferson and Millsap left Jazz in the summer of 2013, the way was clear for Favors on the starting line-up. On November 1, 2014, he scored 32 points against the Phoenix Suns , a personal best. Favors had a breakthrough in the 2014/15 season. He finished with a career best of 16.0 points on average, making him the second best jazz point collector, behind Gordon Hayward . He improved his throw and also hit more outside the zone . He also achieved career highs in blocks (1.7) and assists (1.5). With the jazz, however, he missed the playoffs. On November 12, 2015, Favors set a career record with 7 blocks against the Miami Heat . On December 5, 2015, Favors achieved a new record with 35 points when beating the Indiana Pacers . In the 2016–17 season, Favors had to struggle with recurring knee problems, which meant that he had to suspend several games from time to time and received limited operating time, which worsened his statistics to 9.5 points in 50 games. Nevertheless, Favors reached the NBA playoffs again for the first time since 2012 with the Jazz. In the following 2017/18 season, Favors looked fitter again and scored 12.3 points in 77 games. In the summer of 2018, Favors signed a partially guaranteed two-year contract for $ 36 million. Favors was able to play an almost injury-free 2018/19 season and played 76 of a possible 82 games.
Change to the Pelicans (since 2019)
To make way for Bojan Bogdanovic 's signing, the Jazz Favors transferred to the New Orleans Pelicans for two future second-round picks.
Others
Shortly before the 2010 NBA draft, Favors signed a contract with the sporting goods manufacturer Adidas .
