From 2003 to 2018 he was a trainer on the staff of the Cincinnati Bengals  . Mother Kristi was a basketball player at Drake University in the first half of the 1990s and then a college-level coach.

As a student, Hayes was a member of the basketball team at the Cincinnati-based Archbishop Moeller High School. In September 2017, he announced his decision to play and study at the University of Texas from the 2018/19 season . The inside player, considered a late developer, was in the starting line-up 21 times in 32 appearances for the Texans and was the third-best scorer of his team with ten points per encounter.
