Loading tower in Groß Neuendorf

The Groß Neuendorf loading tower is located at the Oder - Groß Neuendorf port in the Letschin municipality , Märkisch-Oderland district ( Brandenburg ). It was built in 1953 and was originally used to handle goods. Today the multi-storey building is used for tourism and gastronomy. Together with the port facilities, the remains of the tracks of the Oderbruchbahn and the machine house with separating and dryer building, the loading tower is entered in the official list of monuments of the state of Brandenburg.

history

The first quay wall in Groß Neuendorf was built in 1909. Two years later there was the second quay wall and two years later the first loading crane. The second loading crane followed in 1928. The first loading tower was built in 1940. The second and still existing loading tower was built in 1953 on behalf of VEAB Groß Neuendorf by the "Design Office for Structural and Industrial Construction Chemnitz of the Ministry of Construction" as a "Tower for pneumatic ship and wagon loading and unloading". The transshipment took place until 1971 on wagons of the Oderbruchbahn, then on trucks . In 1973 the railway was stopped. A third loading crane was completed in 1982.

The transshipment point and with it the loading tower gradually lost its real importance.

Construction

The loading tower rests on four concrete pillars, between which a track runs under the tower. Two more tracks are located between the loading tower and the quay wall of the Oder port. The pump and suction trunks could reach the wagons and ships because they were kept at a great distance by crane booms above.

The tower has six floors, which can be reached by stairs. In a shaft that runs through all floors, the pipes lead from the outer booms via pumps and sieves to the conveyor bridge, which led from the first floor inland into the machine house. There the grain was dried, cleaned and made available. Two more conveyor bridges led from the machine house to the north and south granaries.

The long-legged construction did not only allow a track running underneath. The loading tower and its facilities were thus also protected against the periodic Oder floods.

Current usage

From 2003 to 2005, the facility was converted for tourist use. Since then, the former loading tower and the surrounding area have been used for tourism. Private investors created a café and hotel rooms in the loading tower, which complement the offers in the further port (overnight stay in railway wagons, hotel in the machine house, viewing path over the former conveyor bridge, tib theater in the railway wagon) (see also web links).
