The Stockenweiler Weiher is located in the Westallgäu hill country between the districts of Volklings and Stockenweiler in the municipality of Hergensweiler at 525 m above sea level . The artificially dammed still water was first mentioned in 1407 as a fish pond of the Heilig-Geist-Spital Lindau . It lies in a cold-age retreat basin of the Rhine Glacier . In addition to groundwater flows, the body of water is fed by a few small, partly only temporarily water-bearing inflows and drainage ditches.

In 1984 the Stockenweiler Weiher nature reserve was set up, which includes the water surface of the pond and some islands overgrown with reed and willow , the shore area with the extensive silting zone overgrown with reed, as well as adjacent fen areas and litter meadows . A total of 34 hectares are under protection. The nature reserve also forms the southern part of the 2.3 km² Stockenweiler Weiher, Degermoos and Schwarzenbach protection zone, which was declared an FFH area in 2003 . The pond is stocked with fish ( carp , pikeperch , pike ) and used for fishing; but it is also the natural habitat of various small fish, including the bullhead . The aim of the protection is to preserve the rich flora and fauna. The area is particularly worth protecting as a breeding ground for various water birds, such as the little bittern and black-necked grebe , and as a resting place for a large number of migratory birds. The occurrence of amphibians and reptiles is also rich , as well as some dragonflies - butterflies and grasshoppers , which have become rare .

On the south side of the pond, a small section of the bank is reserved for "adapted" leisure activities. Bathing is only allowed in this area.
