Deron Michael Williams (born June 26, 1984 in Parkersburg , West Virginia ) is a retired American basketball player who was active in the NBA from 2005 to 2017 . Williams played in the position of point guard and was elected three times NBA All-Star , and twice in the All-NBA Second Team between 2010 and 2012 . With the national team of the USA he was able to win the gold medal at the Olympic Games in 2008 and 2012 .
Career
Early years
Williams was a very good wrestler in his youth . As an 8-year-old as well as a 12-year-old, he was able to win the Texas state championship in his age and weight class. He attended The Colony High School in The Colony, Texas . He led the Colony Cougars to at least the 5A Texas State Semifinals almost annually.
college
Williams, who grew up in Texas , played college basketball for the University of Illinois team . In his freshman season, he was on the starting line-up in 30 of 32 possible games and was third in this category in the Big Ten Conference with 4.53 assists per game. In his sophomore year, his average point rose from 6.3 to 14 points per game and he posted 6.17 assists per game. Thanks to these achievements, he was elected to the First Team of the Big Ten Conference.
In 2005 Williams led the Fightinglassung to the finals of the NCAA Division I Basketball Championship , where they had to admit defeat to the team from North Carolina. His achievements on the field earned Williams numerous awards. He was part of the First Team All-Big Ten, the Big Ten All-Tournament Team and the All-Final Four Team. After that season, Williams decided to sign up for the 2005 NBA Draft .
The first years with the Utah Jazz (2005 to 2011)
In the 2005 NBA Draft , Williams was selected third by the Utah Jazz , who previously made a deal with the Portland Trail Blazers to swap draft positions. Numerous journalists were surprised by this choice, as the experts favored Chris Paul in the position of point guard , but the choice of Jazz was made retrospectively with Williams' election to the selection team of the best NBA newcomers ( NBA All-Rookie First Team ) justified.
In his second professional season, Williams developed into a leading player in jazz. He finished the regular season of the 2006/07 NBA season as a player with the second most basket assists per game in the league, and Williams also received most of the playing time of all Jazz players and was their third best point collector. Williams reached the playoffs with the Jazz thanks to 51 wins in the regular season. In the first round they were able to prevail after seven games against the Houston Rockets and in the second round after five games against the Golden State Warriors . Only in the Western Conference Finals was against the San Antonio Spurs over . After the season, Williams won with the US national team , the basketball America Cup 2007 .
In his third NBA season, Williams was able to improve his yield on the field again. At the end of the season he scored 18.8 points and 10.5 assists per game for the first time a double double on average. Despite his impressive achievements, he was not elected to the NBA All-Star Team , but took part in the All-Star Skills Challenge and won it. The Jazz qualified again for the playoffs with 54 wins. In the first round they defeated the Houston Rockets again, but met the Los Angeles Lakers in the second round and had to admit defeat to them. The following summer, he was named 2008 Olympic Champion as part of the US selection .
In his fourth NBA season, 2008/2009, Williams had to sit out 13 of the first 15 games of Jazz due to an ankle injury. The season was overshadowed by numerous injuries to his teammates and despite a strong 19.2 points and 10 assists on average, Williams was again not elected to the NBA All-Star Team . He responded to his re-omission with five strong back-to-back games, each with over 30 points. In the NBA playoffs, the end of the first round was already after five games for the Jazz. The following season Williams was then elected to the NBA All-Star Team for the first time . The 2010 NBA Playoffs started with a victorious first round against the Denver Nuggets , but in the second round the Jazz had nothing to oppose the Los Angeles Lakers.
The 2010/2011 NBA season started quite well for Williams, who had an average of 21.3 points per game after 53 games and was invited to the All-Star Game for the second time. The longtime head coach of Jazz, Jerry Sloan , announced his retirement on February 7, 2011. However, both Williams and Sloan denied that this was due to disagreements between them.
Move to New Jersey (2011)
A good two weeks later, on February 23, 2011, Williams was transferred from the Utah Jazz to the New Jersey Nets in order to prevent in advance the possibility that Williams would move to another club for no consideration after the 2011/2012 season. In return, Devin Harris , Derrick Favors and Draft Picks (with which, among other things, Enes Kanter was later selected) moved to Utah. He made his debut in a game against the San Antonio Spurs in which he dealt 12 assists, one game later Williams dealt 17 assists against the Houston Rockets and in his third game he dealt another 18 assists. Those combined 47 assists in his first three games is the highest number of assists ever made by a player in the NBA in his first three games with a team.
Engagement at Beşiktaş Milangaz (2011)
Because of the lockout in the NBA, Williams moved to the Turkish club Beşiktaş Milangaz , which also had Allen Iverson in its ranks. The contract was valid until the end of the NBA strike. After agreeing on a new coat contract on December 8, 2011, the pay dispute ended in the NBA and Williams returned to the Nets. During a game in the EuroChallenge on November 22, 2011, Williams scored 50 points in the game against BG Göttingen .
Return to the Nets, moving to Brooklyn (2011 to 2015)
He was chosen by the coaches of the NBA in the selection of the East at the All-Star Game 2012. On March 5, 2012, he achieved a career record with 57 points and more than any player before in the season, in a game against the Charlotte Bobcats . He set a new career record and a new team record. After the 2011/2012 season, he moved the player option in his contract and thereby became a free agent. The Lakers, Nets, Mavericks and Trail Blazers, among others, were interested in him. Ultimately, however, he wanted to choose between Dallas and Brooklyn.
On July 11, 2012, he signed a five-year contract for around $ 98 million with the Nets. On March 8, 2013 he set a new NBA record in the home game against the Washington Wizards with nine three-point throws in the first half.
The 2013-14 season was the weakest for Williams since his rookie year . He averaged 14.3 points, 2.6 rebounds and 6.1 assists in 64 games. With Brooklyn, however, he reached the playoffs for the second time in a row, where they moved into the second playoff round. In the 2014/15 season, too, Williams failed to justify his high contract. After the Nets tried unsuccessfully to transfer Williams, Williams agreed with the Nets on July 10, 2015 on a buyout from his contract, which was dated until 2017, and thus became a free agent . The outstanding amount of $ 43 million will continue to be paid by the Nets.
Dallas Mavericks (2015 to 2017)
A few days later, on July 14, 2015, Williams signed a two-year contract for around $ 10 million with the Dallas Mavericks . On March 20, 2016, he scored 31 points and 15 assists in defeating the Portland Trail Blazers. This made him the first Maverick since Jason Kidd in 1995 to hit a 30/15 game. With the Mavericks, Williams reached the playoffs that season, but retired there in the first round. In February 2017, he was released from the Mavericks after the recently signed Yogi Ferrell convinced him with his achievements.
Cleveland Cavaliers (2017)
A few days later, Williams joined the defending champion in the NBA, the Cleveland Cavaliers . After a season with the Cavaliers, his contract ran out and Williams became a free agent .
National team
Williams took part with the US national team in the 2007 American Basketball Championship and won the tournament with the team. He was also a member of the 2008 and 2012 Olympic teams, with which he won gold medals.
