Maysville is a city in Mason County in the northeast of the US state Kentucky . According to the 2000 census , the city had 8,993 inhabitants. The town is also the county seat of Mason County.

history

Founded around 1780 as a river port city at the confluence of Limestone Creek and Ohio Rivers . Initially referred to as Limestone , the town was eventually named in 1787 after John May, a wealthy lawyer and landowner in the area. The first post office opened in 1794. Over time, Maysville became an important port and the establishment of a road link to Lexington helped the city develop economically. Maysville has one of the largest Burley tobacco markets in the world and, until the collapse of hemp production in Kentucky, had one of the largest transshipment centers for this raw material as the basis for the transport bags.

Mason County's headquarters was in nearby Washington from 1788 to 1848 , but has since been transferred to Maysville.
