history
Foundation and the first years
In Kırıkhan, after the French occupation of Hatay, the local youth began to establish sports clubs. Since the population at that time was made up of the majority of Turks as well as Arabs and Armenians, these three groups played football with each other without a club membership.
On July 5, 1938, the Turkish general Şükrü Kanatlı visited the city and contacted the youth. After Kanatlı fulfilled the youngsters' desire for team jerseys and soccer balls, they founded the soccer club Kırıkhan Gençlik ve Spor Kulübü (German: Kırıkhan Youth and Sports Club ) in the same year . After the club was founded, the club played in the regional amateur league. After the unification of the short-lived state of Hatay with Turkey , the association continued its activities within the new state.
Entry into Turkish professional football
After Turkish professional football had been reduced from three to just two professional leagues in the summer of 1980, the third highest professional football league, the 3rd Lig , now known as TFF 2nd Lig , was reintroduced in 1984 on the directive of then President Turgut Özal . In addition, it was announced that clubs could apply to participate in the league after meeting certain requirements and conditions. In order to promote urban development, several Kırıkhan city notables tried to meet the requirements. After the conditions were met, the Turkish Football Association confirmed participation. So Kırıkhanspor took part in the 1984/85 season of the re-introduced 3rd Lig. Already in the first season the club reached the championship of the 3rd Lig and rose for the first time in the club's history to the second highest Turkish league, then known as the 2nd Lig . After the club had always reached its first four third division seasons in the top table positions, he missed relegation in the third division season 1988/89 and rose again to the regional amateur league.
After relegation, Kırıkhanspor played for two seasons in the amateur league. In the summer of 1991 the club rose again to the 3rd Lig. They played here for the next three years and rose again to the amateur league in the summer of 1994.
Return to professional football and modern times
Kırıkhan qualified at the end of the 2008/09 season for the playoff phase of Amatör Küme , the then top division in Turkish amateur football. In this playoff phase, carried out in Akçaabat , the last promoted players for the TFF 3rd Lig , the fourth-highest Turkish professional league, were played. Here Kırıkhanspor prevailed in the final with 5-3 on penalties against Kayseri Pansu Şekerspor and took part in professional football again after a 15-year absence.
Raised to the TFF 3rd Lig, the club received no license for its home stadium from the Turkish Football Association . The club played its home games for the next two seasons in the neighboring Iskenderun Stadium on July 5th . In his fourth division season, the season ended fourth in the table and qualified for the playoff phase of the 3rd Lig, in which the last promoted TFF 2nd Lig were determined. In the playoff phase, the club was eliminated in the semi-finals.
