Galata SK is a Turkish football club from the Istanbul district and Galata district . From 1966 to 1993 the club was a permanent member of the TFF 2. Lig and TFF 1. Lig and has been playing in the lower Istanbul amateur leagues since 1993. The club has no relationship to the well-known traditional Turkish club Galatasaray Istanbul and the similarity of names results from the fact that both teams are based in the same district. The club plays its games in the 6,000-seat Yıldıztabya Stadium .

history

founding

The association was founded in 1932 under the leadership of Suat Karaosman in the Galata district of Istanbul as Çeşme Meydanı Gençlerbirliği . Two years later, the club was registered as a registered club and took part in the İstanbul Futbol Ligi (German Istanbul Football League ). In 1936 the club name was no longer liked and changed to Galata Gençlerbirliği . In 1940 they united with the Bozkurt Kulübü to form the Galata Gençlik Spor association . The founders of the association during the merger with Bozkurt included Saim Birkök, Kamil Bingöl, Server Işıltan, Tevfik Tarı, Nuri Mertçil, Yusuf Çakır and Sabri Cindemir. Later the name was finally changed to the current form in Galata Spor Kulübü , or Galata SK for short .

The time in the Istanbul football leagues

Galata SK played the following years in the lower Istanbul football leagues. In the 1955/56 season Galata reached the championship of the İstanbul Mahalli Profesyonel Ligi and should have promoted to the İstanbul Profesyonel Ligi , the top division in Istanbul , according to the rules at that time. For reasons not discussed, Galata was not accepted into this league despite promotion.

From the summer of 1956, the club took part in the newly introduced İstanbul İkinci Profesyonel Ligi , also known under the name İstanbul İkinci Profesyonel Küme , (German: 2nd Istanbul Professional League ). Up to this point in time there had been no national league in Turkey, only regional leagues in the larger metropolitan areas, of which İstanbul Profesyonel Ligi (German: Istanbul Professional League) was the most renowned. This league only replaced the İstanbul Futbol Ligi in the summer of 1952 and was played without relegation until the summer of 1956. Since more and more clubs applied to participate in the Istanbul professional league and those responsible wanted to increase the attractiveness of this league, the 2nd Istanbul professional league was introduced. The champion of this league was to replace the relegated from the 1st Istanbul professional league and meet the demand of the other Istanbul clubs. Galata was one of the founding members of this league and finished the first season as champions and should have been promoted to the 1st Istanbul professional league. Despite the championship achieved, the national football association refused promotion.

From the spring of 1959, the first nationwide Millî Lig , now known as the Süper Lig, was founded in Turkish football . It replaced all regional leagues in the country as the highest division and thus also the İstanbul Profesyonel Ligi . With the establishment of the Millî Lig, all major Istanbul teams such as Galatasaray , Beşiktaş , Fenerbahçe , Karagümrük SK and others left the Istanbul professional leagues. All remaining Istanbul teams, including Galata SK, continued to play in the Istanbul leagues, which have now received the status of a regional amateur league. Galata SK won two championships in the lower Istanbul leagues.

Entry into professional football

The Turkish Football Association announced that it would introduce a second highest professional league for the 1963/64 season. The main reason for the formation of the league was: In the summer of 1959, the first national professional league in Turkish football, the Millî Lig , now known as the Süper Lig , was introduced. In the first five seasons of this league, the picture emerged that only teams from the three cities of Istanbul , Ankara and Izmir took part in the game and the remaining provinces of Turkey stayed away from the league. Only Adana Demirspor from the fourth largest city Adana made it into the Millî Lig in the summer of 1960, but was relegated again after just one season. After these developments, the Turkish Football Association decided in the early 1960s to start a project that would allow all provinces of Turkey to participate in professional football. To this end, the governors and notables of all provinces nationwide have been informed that, if not present, you could represent your province in this league by founding a competitive football club. As a result, new clubs were founded within a few years and applications were made to participate in the second highest league, the 2nd league, which was founded in the summer of 1963. The second highest division, the Türkiye 2. Futbol Ligi , started for the first time in the 1963/64 season. Since the provinces applied for the establishment of a club, the fulfillment of the conditions or the participation at different speeds, the league was played again in its first seasons with teams mainly from the four largest cities Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir and Adana. Only with Çukurova İdman Yurdu and Bursaspor two teams from other provinces took part in the game. Galata SK was added to the league in the second division season 1966/67 .

The first second league game years and relegation to the 3rd league

In the 2nd Lig they occupied safe non-relegation places in the middle table segment for the first two seasons. With the season 1968/69 you began to play against relegation. After 1968/69 and 1969/70 still succeeded in relegation, they missed relegation in the 1970/71 season and rose to the newly founded third division, the 3rd league .

Relegation to amateur football and renewed participation in the second division

After relegation to the 3rd league in the summer of 1971, they played here for six seasons and rose again to the amateur league in the summer of 1977 after eleven seasons. Already after one season, however, the direct promotion to the 3rd Lig succeeded. Raised to the 3rd Lig, but again missed relegation and rose again after one season back in the amateur league. For the 1982/83 season they rose again from the amateur league. Since the third highest professional league was abolished in the summer of 1980, the teams rose from the amateur league directly to the 2nd league. So after eleven years of abstinence, Galata SK took part in the second highest Turkish league again. Promoted to the 2nd league, the club played in this league for four seasons. In the 1985/86 season they missed relegation in the 2nd Lig and rose to the 3rd Lig, which was re-introduced in the meantime .

2. Third division period and relegation to amateur football

Galata SK played from 1986 to 1993 in the 3rd Lig and rose in the summer of 1993 in the amateur league.

Modern times

Since 2010, the club has been playing in the Istanbul Süper Amateur Ligi, which was introduced in summer 2010 . The status of the league corresponds to the second highest Turkish amateur league and the sixth highest division in Turkish football.
