Sefer Karaer (born October 20, 1956 in Istanbul ) is a former Turkish football player and coach. As a homegrown and long-time player, he is associated with Galatasaray Istanbul . He is the father of soccer player Anil Karaer and TV presenter Caner Karaer .

Player career

Karaer started club football in the youth of Galatasaray Istanbul . From here he moved to the first division club Kayserispor in the summer of 1979 . At this club he made it quickly into the starting eleven, but he rose with his team at the end of the season in the Türkiye 2. Futbol Ligi . After a year in the 2nd Lig Karaer moved to his old club Galatasaray. He was switched to Galatasaray by the head coach straight away in Brian Birch as a regular player and formed the defense of his team with Fatih Terim , Raşit Çetiner , Cüneyt Tanman and Ali Çoban . He finished the season with his team as the Turkish Football Cup winner , TSYD Cup winner . He also won the Devlet Başkanlığı Cup with his team . For the new season, Galatasaray brought in Özkan Sümer, a head coach. Under this, Karaer eked a reservist existence and was only used sporadically. So he was loaned for the second half of the season to league rivals Kocaelispor and the entire following season to the first division club Karagümrük SK .

In the summer of 1984, Jupp Derwall took over as coach at Galatasaray and kept Karaer as a substitute in the team. Karaer played seven league games by the end of the season and won the Turkish Cup for the second time with his team . After he had spent the first half of the 1985/86 season at Galatasaray, he moved to Denizlispor for the second half .

Karaer played for third division Galata SK until the summer of 1993 and then ended his career.

Coaching career

After his playing career, Karaer decided to continue working as a coach. From 1993 to 2007 he worked at Galatasaray Istanbul as a youth coach . In the 2007/08 season he worked at Etimesgut Şekerspor as an assistant coach. In 2008/09 he worked as head coach for the Istanbul amateur club Haliç SK .
