Forms of Court Tombs

The Court Tomb of Edergole ( Irish Eadargóil - German  "between the fork" ) is located on a field wall, southwest of Rockcorry, north of Dartry (also Dartrey) in County Monaghan in Ireland . The well-preserved megalithic complex in the gallery area is marked as "Giants Grave" on the historical map of Ireland. Court Tombs are among the megalithic chamber tombs ( English chambered tombs ) of the British Isles . With around 400 specimens, they are found almost exclusively in Ulster in the north of Ireland or in Northern Ireland .

The large gallery measures 7.5 m in length and 1.8 m in width. At the northeast end, two bearing stones and a large lintel form the former access from the courtyard. There are no traces of the cairn or the northern arm of the court. The southern one is integrated into the border fence. William Copeland Borlase (1848–1899) describes the system in his book " The Dolmen of Ireland " (1897 - Vol. 1 p. 293)

A cross was carved into one of the largest stones used to delimit the road to Christianize the monument at some point in the recent past.

An old burial ground lies on the sharp bend directly in front of the court tomb. It is decorated with many unusual headstones in the unique style of southern Ulster . Skull and crossbones motifs on the back of the stones indicate that the burial ground once belonged to an early Christian monastery or church.
