Candemir Berkman (born January 1, 1934 in Istanbul ) is a former Turkish football player , coach and official. Through his many years of work for Galatasaray Istanbul and as a home grown man, he is strongly associated with this club. On fan and club pages he is seen as one of the most important players in club history. He was an important part of the team that had a strong influence on Turkish football in the 1950s and 1960s with players like Metin Oktay , Kadri Aytaç , Suat Mamat , İsfendiyar Açıksöz , Ali Beratlıgil and Turgay Şeren . Due to his tight man coverage and body-hugging style of play, he was referred to as Kasap Candemir (dt. Candemir the butcher or butcher Candemir ). From 1992 to 1995 he was a board member of the Turkish Football Association for three years .

society

Berkman attended the renowned Galatasaray grammar school and played here in the youth department of the traditional club Galatasaray Istanbul - the club that was founded by students of the Galatasaray grammar school. Word of his footballing talent spread quickly in the Galatasaray community and he started playing for the Galatasaray youth department.

In December 1957, the incumbent coach of the professional team Musa Sezer was replaced by the British George Dick . This carried out a revision within the team squad and brought some players from the youth department into the professional squad, including Berkman. At the time of his promotion, there was no international professional league in Turkey. Instead, regional leagues existed in metropolitan areas such as Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir , of which the İstanbul Profesyonel Ligi (German: Istanbul Professional League ) was considered the most renowned. Berkman made his debut for Galatasaray during the game in the Istanbul professional league on December 28, 1957 against Kasımpaşa Istanbul . In this game he played the full length of the game. In the further course of the season he was used in seven other games. His team fought head-to-head for the Istanbul championship with arch-rivals Fenerbahçe Istanbul this season and prevailed against arch-rivals in the last few game days and became Istanbul champions. This also brought Berkman his first title at club level. After the end of the season, Galatasaray took part in the Federasyon Kupası (German Association Cup), while Berkman was used in ten of the possible eleven matches during this tournament. His team finished the tournament in 2nd place behind arch rivals Beşiktaş Istanbul . In the İstanbul League of the 1958/59 season, Berkman consolidated his regular place and completed almost all of his club's games. The team fought again with Fenerbahçe for the championship and this time forgot the race.

From the spring of 1959, Berkman and the team took part in the newly founded and nationwide Millî Lig (today's Süper Lig). This league replaced the regional leagues in the larger metropolitan areas, such as B. the İstanbul Profesyonel Ligi, as the highest and only Turkish league. In the first season of the Millî Lig , the championship was played in two rounds. In the first round, the league system took place in two separate groups. In the second round, the two group winners decided the championship among themselves in a final with a return leg. Berkman took part in the competition with his team in the group red . Here he took first place in the table with Galatasaray and qualified for the final of the Turkish championship, which was played in two matches. Berkman completed all fourteen possible league games of his team. In the first leg of the final, his team defeated Fenerbahçe 1-0. The team lost 4-0 in the second leg, giving their arch-rivals their first Turkish championship. In the next two seasons of the Millî Lig Berkman lost his regular place in phases, but always completed at least half of the possible league games over the full distance. In the 1961/62 season he immediately established himself again as a regular player. Throughout the season, his team once again fought head-to-head with arch rivals Fenerbahçe for the Turkish championship and finished the league four points ahead of champions. This was the first time that both Galatasaray and Berkman became Turkish football champions. Also in the 1962/63 season , the club succeeded in the Turkish championship and thus the title defense. His team also won the newly introduced Turkish Football Cup this season , becoming both the first Turkish cup winner and the first Turkish double winner. In addition, Berkman's team made it to the quarter-finals in the 1962/63 European Cup of National Champions and thus achieved the best placement of a Turkish team to date in this competition in particular and in all European club competitions in general. In the next two seasons, Berkman and his team missed defending their title in the league, but won the Turkish Football Cup for the second and third time. As a result, Berkman was also part of the team that won the Turkish Football Cup three times in a row for the first time.

Since Galatasaray failed to win the championship twice in a row, a revision of the squad was carried out in the summer of 1965 and some long-standing players were transferred to other clubs. As part of this revision, Berkman also left Galatasaray for the 1965/66 season and moved to city and league rivals Vefa Istanbul . For this club he played for the next three seasons and then ended his career in the summer of 1968. On June 26, 1968, he said goodbye to professional football with an anniversary game in which Galatasaray met a national team.

National team

Berkman started his national team career in 1958. He was appointed as part of a friendly against in the squad of the Turkish B national teams and made his general international debut in the encounter against the second selection of Bulgaria. In 1960 and 1961 he played three more times for his country's B team.

In 1961, he was then nominated by national coach Sandro Puppo in the squad of the Turkish national team . Berkman made his international debut in May 1958 as part of a friendly against the South Korean national team . After this encounter, Berkman was one of the regularly nominated players of the Turkish A selection for about three years.

His last international match was against Poland on September 27, 1964 . In total, he played eleven times for the Turkish national team. In addition to his work for the senior national team, Berkman was also active four times for the B national team.

Coaching career

In his last playing season, the first division season 1967/68 , he worked at Vefa Istanbul as a player- coach . After the end of his playing career it was announced that Berkman Vefa would look after the coming season as head coach. Contrary to this announcement, he became assistant coach at Galatasaray Istanbul a day later and thus assisted head coach Tomislav Kaloperović . After a year in this position, his contract was not renewed here, although Kaloperović should continue to work as head coach.

Berkman took over after the release of Galatasaray at the second division Kütahyaspor as head coach and coached this club for a season. After this season, both sides could not agree on a further collaboration, so Berkman left the club.

Then Berkman took over the new second division Hatayspor for the new season . After experiencing a heated controversy with his players here in April 1971, he resigned from his position and traveled to Istanbul.

In September 1972 he began to look after the second division club Zonguldakspor .

For the second half of the 1973/74 season he was presented as a coach at the second division team Ankara Şekerspor . With this club he played for a long time with his former club Zonguldakspor for the championship and thus direct promotion to the 1st Lig . At the end of the season, the team awarded the promotion to Zonguldakspor. While working for Şekerspor, he was beaten up by opposing fans during the away game against Aydınspor .

In the summer of 1975 Berkman took over the first division promoted Balıkesirspor . He led this club through his only first division season and missed relegation at the end of the season with him.

In 1977 he worked for a short time for Galatasaray as a scout on the transfer committee.

In the spring of 1978 he took over the southeast Turkish representative Urfaspor . Here he resigned from his office in March. First he quarreled with the club president Sükrü Çadirci and informed him of his resignation. This rejected Berkman's resignation. Then Berkman got drunk in a pub and cut his wrists.

In the summer of 1978 he took over his old club Vefa Istanbul as head coach. He coached this club for a season and was fourth. In the new season he continued to coach Vefa. He left the club for the winter break.

In 1980 Berkman worked again on the Galatasaray Transfer Committee.

For the 1980/81 season he came to an agreement with the Istanbul club Galata SK and looked after this club for a season.

In the summer of 1981 he began to work as a coach for Vefa SK for the third time. At the end of the 1981/82 season he was dismissed as head coach at this club. He then worked for Vefa as a consultant for a while.

In the 1990s he worked for some time as a talent scout for the Turkish Football Association.

Trivia

  • Since the opening of the new Türk Telekom Arena stadium , under the patronage of the main sponsor, Türk Telekom , Galatasaray Istanbul has been organizing thanks for its former legendary players before every home game.
