Tarık Daşgün (born August 26, 1973 in Ankara ) is a former Turkish football player and coach. Because of his work for Gençlerbirliği Ankara and Fenerbahçe Istanbul , he is associated with these clubs. He was considered one of the greatest talents in Turkish football in the mid-1990s . Since he was unable to achieve the expected career due to his unregulated private life, he is used as a cautionary example of wasted talent for young football players.

Player career

Gençlerbirliği Ankara

Daşgün passed through the youth department of Gençlerbirliği Ankara and was invited to a selection tournament organized in Mersin in 1991 by the then assistant coach of the Turkish national team , Fatih Terim , who was also the head coach of the Turkish U-21 national team and the director of the youth national teams. In this tournament, Daşgün was so convincing that Terim called the friend of the club president of Gençlerbirliği, İlhan Cavcav , and suggested that Daşgün be included in the professional team. So Daşgün was equipped with a professional contract in the course of the 1991/92 season, but continued to play for about a year exclusively for the reserve team of the club. In order to allow him match practice in a professional league, his club loaned him to the third division club Yeni Turgutluspor for the second half of the season. With this club he completed ten league games by the next summer and achieved promotion to the 2nd Turkish division with him through the league championship he had won . After he returned to Gençlerbirliği in the summer of 1993, he played the first half of the season again exclusively for the reserve team. It was only with the new coach Augusto Palacios that he was accepted into the professional squad and made his first division debut in the league game on February 13, 1994 against Altay Izmir . By the end of the season, he played seven more league games without attracting any particular attention. In the 1994/95 season Daşgün experienced his breakthrough under the coaches Zafer Göncüler and Metin Türel . He scored 13 league goals in 28 league games, gave several assists and thus became the club's most successful goalscorer.

Fenerbahçe Istanbul

Due to his good performance at Gençlerbirliği, the Istanbul clubs became aware of Daşgün, above all Fenerbahçe Istanbul and Galatasaray Istanbul . So the responsible Fenerbahçes began in the last days of the 199/95 season with the transfer negotiations. After Daşgün was quickly convinced of a move to Fenerbahçe, the transfer remained pending due to disagreements over the transfer fee. Daşgün's club demanded a transfer of 100 billion Turkish lira for him . In order to secure Daşgüns commitment and to prevent Daşgüns from being committed by arch rivals Galatasaray Istanbul, those responsible kidnapped Fenerbahçes Daşgün with his consent and made sure that Daşgün could not play for his club in the game against Bursaspor on the last matchday . Finally, the change came about for the then record-breaking transfer fee of 100 billion lira. With his club he was able to win the TSYD Istanbul Cup , which was held before the season, just a few weeks after his move . He himself scored a goal in two games during this tournament. After this tournament, Daşgün could not fully participate in team training due to injury and was therefore sent to several doctors for examination. As the most expensive new signing, he was used from the start of the game in spite of this delicate injury situation in the encounter from the first matchday against Karşıyaka SK . According to his own statements, he asked his coach Carlos Alberto Parreira to be substituted at the beginning of the second half and was then replaced in the 46th minute by Bülent Uygun in severe pain. After this encounter, Daşgün was sidelined for more than a month due to injury. In addition to his injuries, he was noticed several times because of his unregulated private life and had to be warned several times by the coach and club board. Although he was supported for a long time by both club president Ali rainen and head coach Parreira and repeatedly received stakes, he could not call up the performance he expected. At the beginning of November he suffered another injury and took off a lot until the start of the second half. With his club he finished the season as a Turkish champion . In his second season at Fenerbahçe, the club signed offensive forces Jay Jay Okocha , Emil Kostadinov and Saffet Sancaklı . Despite this increased competition, Daşgün managed to gain a foothold this season and completed a total of 39 competitive games in which he scored four goals. I.a. he was involved in the 1-0 away win of his team Fenerbahçe Istanbul against reigning English champions Manchester United in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League this season . With this victory, he and his team ended the 40-year invincibility of the Red Devils at European home games. For the season, Fenerbahçe signed the Croatian Otto Barić as head coach. This used Daşgün in only twelve competitive games, always referred to the problems with Daşgün and indicated that he was not planning with him in the long term. During the winter break, Barić urged the club's management to sign offense player John Moshoeu from league rivals Kocaelispor . After this request, some club officials got in touch with Kocaelispor and tried to use Daşgün or his teammates Kubilay Toptaş and Sabin Ilie in this transfer . Daşgün, who was loaned to Antalyaspor a few days before these developments and had already signed a contract with this club, then stated that he would only go to Kocaelispor as a loan player. Finally, at the end of December 1997, Fenerbahçe signed Moshoeu and Faruk Yiğit from Kocaelispor and gave Daşgün and Ilie a sum of 1.5 million dollars in return.

In summary, he could not live up to expectations with the Istanbul team in two and a half seasons and did not make the breakthrough he expected. The Turkish soccer press and Daşgün himself attributed this largely to his unregulated private life. After moving to Fenerbahçe, Daşgün enjoyed the Istanbul nightlife, did not attend the training sessions and coaching talks with the necessary seriousness, ate poorly and did not take any breaks to relax. These circumstances, which Daşgün confirmed in numerous interviews, meant that he was injured very often, was out of shape and was therefore unable to perform as expected. Daşgün also mentioned that he had been immature during his time at Fenerbahçe and that he couldn't handle the sudden fame alone in the big city. This vicious circle was exacerbated by the fact that Daşgüns' direct competitors such as B. Elvir Bolić , Aykut Kocaman , Dalian Atkinson , Bülent Uygun convinced.

Kocaelispor and Ankaragücü

After moving to Kocaelispor, Daşgün was used by head coach Holger Osieck in eleven league games, scoring four goals, showing convincing performances again after two years and being nominated again for the Turkish national team. After Kocaelispor had hired a new head coach with Güvenç Kurtar for the season , Daşgün was used less often and was loaned to MKE Ankaragücü at the end of September 1998 until the end of the season. At Ankaragücü he scored nine goals in 24 league games and again shows a convincing performance. After the good performance at the capital city, Daşgün was only kept in the squad by Kurtar in the coming season and used in seven league games. Since he could not show the same performance here as at Ankaragücü, he was handed over to the capital city representative Ankaragücü at the end of October 1999, including the transfer. Here he seamlessly continued his previous year's performance and finished the season eight goals in 22 league games.

Yimpaş Yozgatspor

After the successful performance at Ankaragücü, Daşgün was committed in the summer of 2000 for a transfer fee of two million dollars from league rivals Yimpaş Yozgatspor . With this club he only played one season and left it again after this had missed relegation at the end of the season.

Gençlerbirliği Ankara (2nd period)

For the 2001/02 season Daşgün returned after six years to his first club Gençlerbirliği. At this club, too, he fell short of expectations and left him after one season.

The second and third division years and the marijuana affair

From the summer of 2002 Daşgün began to play in the 2nd Futbol Ligi for Sakaryaspor . For this club he played for one and a half seasons and then moved to third division Kardemir Karabükspor in spring 2004 .

Yimpaş Yozgatspor (2nd period) and the marijuana affair

For the 2004/05 season Daşgün moved to the second division Yimpaş Yozgatspor. Here he was positive for marijuana during the doping control before the league match on November 13, 2005 against Antalyaspor . As a consequence of this finding, his association Yozgatspor dissolved the current contract with Daşgün on January 3, 2006 without waiting for the sentence. He was suspended for two years because of the positive doping test.

Dalian Aerbin and Bingölspor

After his unilateral contract termination with Yozgatspor and his two-year suspension, Daşgün moved to the Chinese club Dalian Aerbin . Here he only played two and a half months and then left this club.

In February 2008 he hired with the expiry of his suspension from the fourth division Belediye Bingölspor . After he worked for this club until the end of the season, he ended his career in the summer of 2008.

National team

Daşgün's international career began in 1994 with an assignment for the Turkish U-21 national team .

As part of a long-term national team camp, Daşgün was nominated for the first time in the squad of the Turkish national team in the summer of 1995 by national coach Fatih Terim , whom Daşgün himself describes as his discoverer . In the course of this tournament Daşgün was in the test match on June 22, 1995 against the Chilean national team his A international debut . After this tournament he played three more times for the U-21 selection.

In April 1998 Daşgün was nominated again after three years in the squad of the senior national team and completed his second and last senior international match in a friendly against the Russian national team .

Coaching career

Half a year after the end of his career, Daşgün took over at his first club, Gençlerbirliği Ankara, in the club's youth department. In the summer of 2010 he was promoted to head coach of the club's reserve team, the Gençlerbirliği Ankara A2.

For the 2011/12 season he was appointed head coach at the second club of Gençlerbirliği, the third division club Hacettepe SK , and worked for two years.

In October 2014 he took over the fourth division club Van Büyükşehir Belediyespor .
