Attractions
A significant part of Szydłowiec's architectural monuments is located on the Great Market Square (Rynek Wielki). The Great Market is dominated by the church in the south and the town hall in the north.
The Catholic Church of St. Zygmunt (German: Siegmund) with a valuable Gothic polyptych , gilded altars, a star vault in the presbytery and a polychrome in the nave is a combination of many art styles. The parish was founded in 1401. At the end of the 15th century Jakub Szydłowiecki began to replace the first wooden structure with a stone church. It is the resting place of Mikołaj Szydłowiecki, whose grave can be seen in the presbytery, and Maciej Radziwiłł, who is buried under the main altar.
The town hall is located in the middle of the market and is the characteristic symbol of the city. It was built between 1602 and 1629 and repeatedly destroyed in wars. It is a valuable example of civil architecture in Poland. The House on the Oak (pl. Dom pod Dębem) is the classical building of the former elementary school, which was built in 1819 by Princess Anna of Zamoyski Sapieżyna. The school was taught according to the Bell-Lancaster system , with a group of older children teaching the younger ones.
At the beginning of the market square there is a monument in memory of Tadeusz Kościuszko , which was erected in 1920. A statue of John Paul II has stood on the church square since 2007. In front of the church is the statue of St. John Nepomuk John of Nepomuk.
The Szydłowiec pillory, installed on the Great Market Square in front of the City Hall, is one of the few remaining objects of this type in Poland. It was built in the first half of the 17th century as a 2.5 m high sandstone column in the late Renaissance style, probably with the construction of the town hall. It is decorated with grimaces , handles and a ball at the tip added in 1899. He last exercised his function in 1788.
