In 1869 he traveled to the Pyrenees . From 1865 to 1876 he exhibited at the Paris salons and also showed his pictures internationally - for example in Vienna, in London (where he won a silver medal in 1871) and in Poland. He was a friend of Cyprian Kamil Norwid and was buried in the Les Champeaux cemetery in Montmorency . One grandson was Eugeniusz Szermentowski, a Polish journalist and writer.

Szermentowski painted in oils and watercolors , mainly landscape and genre paintings. He mainly chose Polish motifs. His early works are dominated by the realism that developed at the Academy in Warsaw. During his time in Paris he made contact with followers of the Barbizon School ; painterly and formal means now came more to the fore. He dedicated himself particularly to the effects of light and shadow. He was one of the first Polish landscape painters who endeavored to reproduce light effects correctly (see the adjacent painting “In the Park”).
