Ergün Acuner (born June 18, 1941 in Izmir , † March 29, 2002 in Maltepe , Istanbul ) was a Turkish football player and coach . Although he also played for arch-rival Beşiktaş Istanbul , Acuner was strongly associated with this club due to his many years of activity for Galatasaray Istanbul and as a home grown man. During his time playing at Galatasaray, he also wore the captain's armband on an interim basis. Because of his football skills, which were rated as outstanding, he was referred to by the trade press and his teammates as Futbol virtüözü ( German  football virtuoso ).

Player career

society

Acuner started his football career in the youth department of Galatasaray Istanbul . In the summer of 1960 he was accepted into the professional squad by the then head coach Gündüz Kılıç and took part in the pre-season preparatory camp. After this camp he was given to the league competitor Izmirspor . At this club he established himself first as a regular player and then as a top performer. After he had been active for two seasons for Izmirspor, he was drafted into military service in the spring of 1962 and was therefore out of all league games until the fall of 1964. In April 1964, the then Turkish chief of staff, Cevdet Sunay, issued a rule change, according to which professional football players were allowed to play for their clubs during their military service. After this rule change, Acuner joined the team again in the fall. Within a few weeks it regained its regular position. In the first division season 1964/65 he finally made his breakthrough as a player. As a midfielder, he scored nine goals, making him the most successful goalscorer of his team and one of the most successful goal scorers in the entire league.

After his good performance, the three Istanbul clubs Fenerbahçe , Beşiktaş and Galatasaray became aware of Acuner again. His first club Galatasaray quickly convinced him to move and so Acuner returned to this club after five years. The first game for Galatasaray was played by Acuner in the final of the Turkish Football Cup of the preseason , which was played shortly before the start of the league. Acuner was set up here by head coach Gündüz Kılıç in the starting line-up and played over the entire length of the game. The game decided Galatasaray 1-0 for themselves, which Acuner was able to win his first title at club level. Also in the league Acuner was set as a regular player under Kılıç and completed 27 of the possible 30 league games. His team finished the season behind Beşiktaş as runner-up after a long neck-and-neck race with arch rivals Beşiktaş Istanbul. Also in the next season, the team fell short of expectations and ended the season third in the table. In the Turkish Football Cup, the team reached the cup final and prevailed here against the old and new champions Beşiktaş. After four untitled seasons in the Turkish championship, long-time coach Gündüz Kılıç was replaced by Bülent Eken in the summer of 1967 . Acuner also retained his regular position under this new coach.

After the hoped-for Turkish championship failed to materialize with this coach, Tomislav Kaloperović was hired as head coach in the summer of 1968 . Under this coach, the Turkish championship succeeded, with which Acuner won this title for the first time. Acuner contributed several assists to this success in 29 games and was considered to be the great assists of the goalgetters Metin Oktay . After he ended his career in the summer and could no longer act as team captain, Acuner wore the armband among others. In the new season, the team experienced a very turbulent season, during which the coach and some players were embroiled in several controversies. Several players were temporarily suspended from the team, including Acuner. After these developments, Kaloperović declared that if he continued to work with Galatasaray beyond the current season, he would demand the sale of Elmastaşoğlu and his teammates Talat Özkarslı , Mehmet Oğuz and Ayhan Elmastaşoğlu . Acuner's team ended the season without a title and reached the quarter-finals as the only ray of hope in the 1969/70 European Cup . After the end of the season, Acuner was taken back to the team by the new coach Brian Birch and had a significant share in the championship of the first division season 1970/71 . With eight goals he was the third most successful goalscorer of his team after Gökmen Özdenak and Metin Kurt . He also acted as a playmaker this championship season and gave several assists.

Despite his good 1970/71 season, Acuner left Galatasaray in the summer of 1971 and was instead hired by arch-rival Beşiktaş Istanbul . He played for this club for two seasons and only won the TSYD Istanbul Cup twice during that time . He then played two seasons for Hatayspor . After he had not found a new professional club in the summer of 1975, he accepted the offer of the Istanbul amateur club Sultantepe SK . Here he played one season and then ended his career.

National team

During his time at Izmirspor , Acuner was nominated for the squad of the Turkish U-21 national team and made his U-21 international debut on May 2, 1965 against the Romanian U-21 national team . After this encounter, Acuner completed four more games for the U-21 selection by the late summer of 1967.

After moving to Galatasaray Istanbul, Acuner also moved into the focus of the Turkish national team's coaching staff . He was part of a scheduled for 23 April 1948 EM1968 - qualifying match against the Irish national team by then-coach Adnan Süvari the first time in the squad of the Turkish national team appointed. In this game he played from the start and made his international debut. From then on he was one of the regularly nominated players for four years and took part with the national team in the ECO Cup in 1967 and ECO Cup in 1969 . Acuner and his team won this trophy both times.

His last international match was on December 13, 1970 against the Albanian national team . In total, he played 14 times for the Turkish national team and scored three goals.

Coaching career

In 1976, Acuner worked briefly as head coach at Gönenspor .

death

On the night of March 29, 2002, Acuner was fatally injured while crossing a railway barrier in Banliyö Trenleri , a type of suburban train , under the railway wheels. Upon advice from passers-by, the police identified Acuner's body. It was not possible to determine whether the accident was an accident or a suicide. Police said that Acuner was heavily drunk at the time of the accident. He was buried after the midday prayer in an Istanbul mosque in the Karacaahmet cemetery .
