Mehmet Oğuz (born May 3, 1949 in Istanbul ) is a former Turkish football player . Through his long work for Galatasaray Istanbul , he is very strongly associated with this club. He was the playmaker of the legendary team that won the Turkish championship three times in a row in the 1970/71 , 1971/72 and 1972/73 seasons . After the departure of the Galatasaray legend Yasin Özdenak and Nihat Akbay , he took over the captain's armband and wore it until he left. Due to his easy waddling gait, he was referred to as Ördek Mehmet (German: Mehmet the duck ) during playing times . He was better known by his other nickname. Since Mehmet Özgül , another Mehmet, joined the team at Galatasaray in the summer of 1972 and he was younger, Oğuz was henceforth referred to as the Büyük Mehmet (German: The Great Mehmet) and Özgül as the Küçük Mehmet (German: The Little Mehmet) .

Player career

society

Oğuz was born in Kadırga , a neighborhood in the Fatih district of Istanbul , and began playing club football in the youth of his district club Kadırga Gençlik Kulübü . Here he was promoted to the first team at a very young age. Through his work for the first men's team, word of his great talent got around in the Istanbul football scene. The then team captain Kadırgas, a certain Orhan, took Mehmet one day and brought him to the then head coach of Galatasarays, to Gündüz Kılıç . Following Orhan's recommendations, Kılıç Oğuz took part in a training game. With his performances in this game Oğuz Kılıç convinced of his talent. Both sides agreed that Oğuz should attend all training sessions until the end of the season. Depending on his performance, Kılıç then wanted to decide whether to include Oğuz on the next season's transfer list. Oğuz convinced Kılıç so much that he included him at the top of the transfer list and underlined his name several times. Since Kılıç left the team at the end of the season, his successor took care of the transfers for the new season. They noticed Oğuz 'underlined name on the transfer list and signed Oğuz for the youth team in the summer of 1967. In the youth department, he caught Bülent Eken , who was himself a legend of the club and at the time head coach of the team, and was immediately accepted into the first team when he was eighteen. He made his professional debut on October 1, 1967 in the first division game against Altınordu Izmir . He then won a regular place for six match days. He kept this until mid-March 1968 and did not play the last seven game days of the season.

For the season 1968/69 Galatasaray hired Tomislav Kaloperović as the new head coach. Under this coach Oğuz experienced the breakthrough he had hoped for. As a nineteen-year-old playmaker, he was seeded from day one and played all of his team's competitive games. He finished the league with his team as the Turkish champion and reached the final in the Turkish Football Cup . In the cup final, which was played back and forth at the time, Oğuz's team lost their first away cup match 0-1 against Göztepe Izmir . The second leg in the Mithatpaşa Stadium at home ended 1-0 in regular time and went into extra time. In the 99th minute Nihat Yayöz scored the 1-1 for Göztepe and thus ensured the trophy win for his team. Oğuz 'missed the Turkish double with his team and Oğuz won his first title with the Turkish championship. In the past season, Oğuz also made it to the national team. In the following season, Oğuz remained behind his previous year's form and was therefore no longer nominated for the Turkish national team . His club coach Kaloperović let him appear as a regular player throughout the first half of the season, but warned Oğuz and his teammate Ali Elveren at the end of the first half of the season that he would no longer use them without increasing their performance. Both players then promised improvement. Oğuz kept his regular place in the second half of the season and played in all competitive matches of his club until the quarter-final first leg in the Turkish Football Cup against Eskişehirspor . In the 66th minute of the cup encounter against Eskişehirspor, Oğuz, according to his own statement at the request of the club official Fazıl Göknar , the German referee Gerd Siepe and was taken off the field as a result of his action. In affect he declared that he would never play for Galatasaray again.

After these developments, head coach Kaloperović suspended Oğuz from the squad and said he was very concerned that his nineteen-year-old player would see the red card for the second time in a season. Kaloperović also said that if he continued to work with Galatasaray beyond the current season, he would demand the sale of Oğuz and his teammates Talat Özkarslı , Ayhan Elmastaşoğlu and Ergün Acuner . Oğuz remained without any further use until the end of the season. His team ended the season without a title and reached the quarter-finals as the only ray of hope in the European Cup in 1969/70 . Oğuz remained suspended from the team squad beyond the end of the season, although the club hired a new head coach in Brian Birch and was therefore already described as a difficult eternal talent. During the winter break of the 1970/71 season, Oğuz was again involved in the team squad. In the first game of the second half of the season, he played his first game in ten months in the away game. By the end of the season he played all of his team's competitive games, returned to the national team and was again Turkish champion with his club at the end of the season. As his team's playmaker, Oğuz received consistently positive reviews from the specialist press. As Galatasaray became champions with a team whose average age was 25, no new players were bought for the next season.

Over the next two years, Oğuz formed such a successful offensive team with Metin Kurt , Gökmen Özdenak , Mehmet Özgül , Olcay Başarır and Suphi Soylu that the team won the Turkish championship again in the following two seasons, even the double in the 1972/73 season , and it was the first team in Turkish football history to win the championship of the Süper Lig three times in a row . The following years were rather disappointing for the team. The season 1973/74 ended the team below expectations, beaten on the 5th place in the table and 1974/75 the club was runner-up with five points difference to the champion Fenerbahçe Istanbul . In the summer of 1976 they were Turkish Cup winners , but finished the league in third place in the table. After these three seasons, which were disappointing for the club's management, it was decided to carry out a revision in the squad and parted ways with some seasoned players, including star striker Metin Kurt. Oğuz, who always showed the performance he expected but was suspended from the team at the end of last season due to a difference of opinion, asked the club management to be allowed to leave the club for a transfer fee. The club management refused his request, kept him in the squad and promoted him to team captain. In the meantime, he handed over the captain's armband to Nihat Akbay , but took over the team leadership a little later. Oğuz played for Galatasaray until the summer of 1979 and then intended to end his career with a farewell game. The club management denied him the request for a farewell game. At that time, Oğuz was also known as Büyük Kaptan ( Great Captain ).

Since the last championship, the time at Galatasaray has been characterized by a lack of harmony between the club's management and the players. Oğuz as a top performer and as captain towards the end of his time at Galatasaray, was mostly involved in these controversies and was therefore often fined or even suspended from the team. After Oğuz was not awarded a farewell game as a serving player, he was persuaded by his close friend, the team captain of arch-rival Fenerbahçe Istanbul , Cemil Turan to switch to arch-rivals before the end of his career. Oğuz had already been released from Galatasaray beforehand, so Fenerbahçe did not have to pay a transfer fee for him. This move, in which the captain Galatasarays switched to arch-rivals Fenerbahçe, kept the media busy all summer. Oğuz played for his new club for one season and then ended his career in the summer of 1970, with a game between Fenerbahçe and Beşiktaş Istanbul .

National team

After Oğuz had his breakthrough as a player during the 1968/69 season and established himself as a regular at Galatasaray Istanbul , he was also called up by the then national coach of the Turkish national team , Adnan Süvari , as part of a friendly against Saudi Arabia . In this game on January 17, 1969, Oğuz also made his international debut. In the same year he was nominated three times for the squad of the Turkish U-21 national team and was used in three games. Since Oğuz was suspended from the Galatasaray team for about ten months from the spring of 1970, he was not considered in the national team during this time. He did not return to the national team until April 1971 and was one of the regularly nominated players for the next four years. He also played three more times for the U-21 team in 1972.

His last international match was on March 19, 1975 in a friendly against the Romanian national team .
