Mehmet Özgül (born January 1, 1950 in Istanbul ) is a former Turkish football player and coach. Through his many years of work for Galatasaray Istanbul , he is strongly associated with this association. On fan and club pages he is seen as one of the most important players in club history. In the 1970s he formed the team that had a strong influence on Turkish football with players such as Muzaffer Sipahi , Tuncay Temeller , Mehmet Oğuz , Bülent Ünder , Metin Kurt and Gökmen Özdenak . Because of his many freckles , he was referred to as Çilli Mehmet (German: Mehmet the Freckle ) when he was a player . He was less known by his other nickname. Since when he switched to Galatasaray in the summer of 1972, Mehmet Oğuz was another Mehmet in the team squad and he was older, Özgül was henceforth referred to as Küçük Mehmet (German: The Little Mehmet) and Oğuz as Büyük Mehmet (German: The Big One) Mehmet).

At the end of his playing career, with 46 goals, he was the player with the fourth most top division for Galatasaray and is currently in 11th place.

Player career

society

Özgül started playing football on the streets of Istanbul. Then he began in the youth department of Taksim SK , the club of the Armenian community in Istanbul, with club football. Here he also rose to the 1st team. He then played for the second division side Orduspor and Gençlerbirliği Ankara . From Gençlerbirliği he then moved to the Istanbul club Süleymaniye Sirkeci SK . At this club he was noticed by the Galatasaray Istanbul head coach Brian Birch .

In the summer of 1972, Özgül moved to the Turkish champions of the last two seasons. At Galatasaray, Özgül immediately ousted Uğur Köken, one of the club's most important players, on the left wing position . From then on, Özgül formed the team’s trio together with Metin Kurt and Gökmen Özdenak . While Özdenak played on the position of the center forward, Özgül acted as left winger and Kurt on right winger. Özgül scored twelve league goals in his first season for his new club and was by far the most successful goalscorer of his team, was 3rd on the scorers list and played a major role in the successes achieved this season. In addition to the Turkish championship, he also won the Turkish Cup with his club and won the Turkish double for the second time in his career .

The following years were rather disappointing for the team. The season 1973/74 ended the team below expectations, beaten on the 5th place in the table and 1974/75 the club was runner-up with five points difference to the champion Fenerbahçe Istanbul . In the summer of 1976 they were Turkish Cup winners , but finished the league in third place in the table. During these three seasons, Özgül established himself more and more as a top performer, was twice the most successful goalscorer of his club and became a crowd favorite. Fan choirs composed especially for him were sung during each game. Because of its freckles , the then very popular pop song Çilli Bom ( Çilli means summer offspring in Turkish ) was rewritten by Hurşid Yenigün to refer to Özgül. This piece of music, which is similar to the nickname Cim Bom by the Galatasaray club, was sung by the fans during every game.

After these three seasons, which were disappointing for the club's management, it was decided to carry out a revision in the squad and parted ways with some seasoned players, including star striker Metin Kurt. Özgül, who was one of the most important performers at the time, was spared this revision. In addition, the departures were replaced by offensive players such as Öner Kılıç and Şükrü Tetik , who should also make Özgül the regular place controversial. Despite this competition, Özgül managed to continue to assert himself as a regular player. His club ended the first season after the revision, the 1976/77 season , again disappointing in 5th place in the table. The club started the new season by winning the TSYD Istanbul Cup, which was played pre-seasonally . In the course of the season Özgül lost his regular place to Tacettin Ergürsel, who was newly signed up at the beginning of the season .

After the successful club had missed the Turkish championship in the 1977/78 season , the club signed the new coach Coşkun Özarı in the summer of 1978 . This was commissioned to carry out a revision in the management. As a result of this revision, Özgül was also put on the sales list. So Özgül left Galatasaray after six years of club membership and moved to Boluspor within the league . At this club he immediately prevailed and scored six league goals by the end of the season, but could not create relegation with the club. After relegation Özhül moved this time to the first division side Bursaspor . Here he formed a successful three-team team with Bahtiyar Yorulmaz and Sinan Bür and reached with his team the 4th place in the table, the best first division placement in the club's history to date. After these two successful seasons, Galatasaray tried to get Özgül back, but failed because of the high transfer fee. Brian Birch took over as coach in the summer of 1980, the coach with whom the club won its last Turkish championship. Birch expressed the wish to see his old player Özgül on his team. It was not until the winter break of the 1980/81 season that the return campaign succeeded. After returning, Özgül played until the end of the season and then moved to second division Anadolu SK for high pay . He left Anadolu after just one season and instead signed on with city and league rivals Süleymaniye Sirkeci SK . Here he played for a season, ending his playing career and then took over the amateur team from Sirkeci SK as head coach.

National team

Özgül started his national team career in 1974. Here he was appointed by national coach Coşkun Özarı as part of a World Cup 74 qualifier against the Swiss national team in the squad of the Turkish national team. In this game Özgül made his international debut. From then on he was one of the regularly nominated national players for four years.

His last international match was against Austria on April 17, 1977 . In total, he played ten times for the Turkish national team and scored one goal.

Coaching career

Özgül began his coaching career immediately after his footballing career by taking care of the amateur team of his last club, Sirkeci SK, as head coach.

In 1988 he worked for a short time at Düzcespor as head coach.

Trivia
