Tuncay Temeller (* 1948 in Zonguldak ) is a former Turkish football player and coach. Due to his long work for Galatasaray Istanbul , he is strongly associated with this club. He was an important part of the legendary team that was the first Turkish team to win the Turkish championship three times in a row in the 1970/71 , 1971/72 and 1972/73 seasons .

Career

society

Temeller went through the youth department of the first division club PTT Ankara . In 1968 he was accepted into the professional squad at the club, which was then active in the 1st Turkish league, and completed ten league and two cup appearances in his first season. In his second first division season for PTT, he also completed ten first division appearances.

For the upcoming 1970/71 season, he and two teammates Metin Kurt and Aydın Güleş from Galatasaray Istanbul were committed. Galatasaray carried out a revision in the squad at this time and hired a new coach in addition to many new players with the Englishman Brian Birch . With the relatively young team, he formed a powerful squad that dominated Turkish football for the next five years. The first thing to do was to win the Turkish football championship at the end of the 1970/71 season . Temeller was the most successful defense in the league this season with Muzaffer Sipahi , Ergün Acuner and Ekrem Günalp , which allowed only 18 goals against in the entire season. The team won the championship again in the following two seasons, and even won the Turkish double in the 1972/73 season , making it the first team in Turkish football history to win the Süper Lig championship three times in a row . The following years were rather disappointing for the team and Temeller. The season 1973/74 ended the team below expectations, beaten on the 5th place in the table and 1974/75 the club was runner-up with five points difference to the champion Fenerbahçe Istanbul . In the summer of 1976 they were Turkish Cup winners , but finished the league in third place in the table.

After these three seasons, which were disappointing for the club's management, it was decided to carry out a revision in the squad and parted with some seasoned players, including Temeller. Unlike many other players, Temeller was not sold, but loaned to the second division club Diyarbakırspor . In addition to his achievements, some controversies with the club official Turgan Ece were decisive in Temeller's departure , which is why he had a difficult position at Galatasaray. When he switched to Diyarbakırspor, he was able to finish the second division season 1976/77 as champions with this team and thus achieve the first promotion and the first first division participation in the club's history. After the promotion Temeller's loan contract was extended for another season, so that he was also in the first division season of the club in the squad.

For the 1978/79 season Temeller returned to Galatasaray, took part in the pre-season preparation camp of the club and was also part of the club's starting squad for that season. In October 1978 he was given up to the northeast Turkish second division club Rizespor . In his first season at this club, he finished the season as a second division champion with his team and thus made the first promotion to the first division in the club's history. After the promotion he received no contract extension and instead switched to the second division Düzcespor . At this club he played for an unknown time and then ended his career.

National team

Temeller's international career began in 1968 with an assignment for the Turkish U-18 national team. After nine appearances for the U-18s, he played from the spring of 1971 for the Turkish U-21 national team . He played for the U-21 team in his country until 1973, even though he was well over 21 and should therefore not be eligible for this selection.

As part of a test match against the Bulgarian national team Temeller was nominated national coach Coşkun Özarı for the first time in the squad of the Turkish national team in the autumn of 1982 . In this game he made his international debut. By the summer of 1984 Temeller was nominated ten more times and completed nine more international matches.

In 1974 Temeller was nominated by the Turkish national coach Özarı in the tournament contingent of the Turkish national team for the 1974 ECO Cups . Temeller played two games during this tournament and won the tournament with his team.
