Ekrem Günalp (born March 1, 1949 in Yenice ) is a former Turkish football player . Through his many years of work for Galatasaray Istanbul , he is strongly associated with this association. He was an important part of the legendary team that won the Turkish championship three times in a row in the 1970/71 , 1971/72 and 1972/73 seasons and dominated Turkish football in the first half of the 1970s .

Career

society

Günalp began his professional career in 1968 with the first division club Gençlerbirliği Ankara . Here he made his professional debut on January 7, 1968 in the away league match against Mersin İdman Yurdu . From then on he was part of the regular formation and played one and a half seasons for the capital city.

For the upcoming 1969/70 season he was signed by the reigning Turkish champions Galatasaray Istanbul . Here he was immediately used as a regular by head coach Tomislav Kaloperović . His team could not repeat the previous year's performance and ended the season in 8th place in the table and thus far below expectations.

For the upcoming 1970/71 season, Galatasaray carried out a revision in the squad and hired a new coach in addition to many new players with the Englishman Brian Birch . With the relatively young team, he formed a powerful squad that dominated Turkish football for the next five years. The first thing to do was to win the Turkish football championship at the end of the 1970/71 season . With Muzaffer Sipahi , Ergün Acuner and Tuncay Temeller, Günalp represented the most successful defense in the league, which allowed only 18 goals against in the entire season. The team won the championship again in the following two seasons , and even won the Turkish double in the 1972/73 season , making it the first team in Turkish football history to win the Süper Lig championship three times in a row . The following years were rather disappointing for the team and Günalp. The season 1973/74 ended the team beaten on the 5th place in the table and 1974/75 the club was runner-up with five points difference to the champion Fenerbahçe Istanbul . In the summer of 1976 they were Turkish Cup winners , but finished the league in third place in the table.

After these disappointing three seasons it was decided to carry out a revision in the squad and parted ways with some seasoned players. In addition, Günalp and his teammates Metin Kurt , Ayhan Elmastaşoğlu , Aydın Güleş , Tuncay Temeller experienced great controversies with the manager Turgan Ece and were suspended from the squad. While many players left the club, Günalp was taken back into the squad during the 1976/77 season and played four league games by the end of the season. At the end of the season he was put on the sales list. After this decision, Günalp's further career remained undocumented.

National team

Günalp's international career began in 1967 with a deployment for the Turkish U-18 national team. From the autumn of 1968 he began to play for the Turkish U-21 national team. He played for the U-21 team in his country until 1973, even though he was well over 21 and should therefore not be eligible for this selection.

As part of an EM1972 qualifier against the Albanian national team , Günalp was nominated for the first time in the squad of the Turkish national team in the autumn of 1971, national coach Cihat Arman . In this game, however, he was only on the bench. He made his international debut in the qualifying game against Poland a month later. By the spring of 1974, Günalp had been nominated five more times and had four more international matches.

In 1974 Günalp was nominated by the Turkish national coach Coşkun Özarı in the Turkish national team's tournament line-up for the 1974 ECO Cup . Günalp played one game during this tournament and won the tournament with his team.
