Aydın Güleş (born March 1, 1944 in Trabzon ) is a former Turkish football player and coach. Through his many years of work for Galatasaray Istanbul , he is very strongly associated with this club. On fan and club pages he is seen as one of the legendary players in club history. He was an important part of the team that won the Turkish championship three times in a row in the 1970/71 , 1971/72 and 1972/73 seasons and dominated Turkish football in the first half of the 1970s .
Player career
society
Güleş started playing football in his hometown of Trabzon . In 1960 he was committed by the local amateur club Trabzon 24 Şubat SK and played with this in the regional amateur league. After two seasons he moved to Rize Güneşspor and then played in the regional amateur league of the neighboring province of Rize . After just one season he returned to Trabzon and started playing for Trabzon Yolspor .
In the summer of 1965 Güleş was signed by the first division club PTT Ankara , the company sports club of the Turkish Post Office, and with this change he became a professional footballer. At this club he immediately established himself as a regular player and was one of the most consistent players in his club for five years. During this time he also rose to become a Turkish U-21 international .
For the 1970/71 season he and his two teammates Metin Kurt and Tuncay Temeller of Galatasaray Istanbul were committed. Galatasaray carried out a revision in the squad and hired a new coach in addition to many new players with the Englishman Brian Birch . With the relatively young team, he formed a powerful squad that dominated Turkish football for the next five years. The first thing to do was to win the Turkish football championship at the end of the 1970/71 season . Güleş represented with Muzaffer Sipahi , Ergün Acuner and Ekrem Günalp the most successful defense in the league, which allowed only 18 goals against in the entire season. The team won the championship again in the following two seasons , and even the double in the 1972/73 season , making it the first team in Turkish football history to win the Süper Lig championship three times in a row . The following years were rather disappointing for the team and Güleş. The season 1973/74 ended the team below expectations, beaten on the 5th place in the table and 1974/75 the club was runner-up with five points difference to the champion Fenerbahçe Istanbul . In the summer of 1976 they were Turkish Cup winners , but finished the league in third place in the table.
After these three seasons, which were disappointing for the club's management, a decision was made to carry out a revision in the squad and parted ways with some seasoned players, including Güleş. He was transferred to the then partner club of Galatasaray, to the second division club Vefa Istanbul . After a season, Galatasaray considered bringing Güleş back, but ultimately decided against it. Güleş played at Vefa for a season and then ended his career.
National team
Güleş 'international career began in 1967 when he played for the Turkish U-21 national team.
As part of a test match against the Bulgarian national team , Güleş was nominated for the first time in the squad of the Turkish national team in the spring of 1972 national coach Coşkun Özarı . In this game he completed his first and only senior international match.
Coaching career
Following his football career, Güleş was from his old club Galatasaray Istanbul as coach of the school team of the Galatasaray high school . set.
In January 1981 he was hired as head coach at Beylerbeyi SK . In June 1981 he was promoted to assistant coach at Galatasaray Istanbul, assisting his former head coach Brian Birch . After Birch was fired in November 1981, Güleş also remained assistant coach with his successor Özkan Sümer . He remained in this position until the summer of 1982.
He then took over the second division Edirnespor for the 1982/83 season . After just one season, he took over the second division Giresunspor .
Güleş later coached various second and third division teams such as Babaeskispor and Bakırköyspor .
