Muzaffer Sipahi (born January 1, 1941 in Ankara ) is a former Turkish football player , coach and official. Through his many years of work for Galatasaray Istanbul , he is strongly associated with this association. On the fan and club side, he is seen as one of the most important players in club history. He was an integral part of the team that won the Turkish championship three times in a row in the 1970/71 , 1971/72 and 1972/73 seasons . He was a board member of the Turkish Football Association for several years in the 1970s and 1980s .

Player career

society

Sipahi was born in 1941 in the Turkish capital Ankara and began playing club football in the youth of Ankara Demirspor . Here he was noticed by the coaches of the professional team and was then accepted into the professional squad. A short time later he was given to Eskişehir Şekerspor , but returned to Ankara Demirspor after just one season. After his return to Ankara Demirspor he fought for a regular place and developed over the years to the top performer of his team and a national player. Sipahi soon received offers from the big Istanbul clubs Fenerbahçe Istanbul , Beşiktaş Istanbul and Galatasaray Istanbul , but turned them down. Ankara Demirspor was the operating team of the state steel and iron companies in Turkey and, as a state institution, was able to provide its players with good framework conditions for the conditions at the time. So Sipahi remained loyal to his club for a long time.

Sipahi remained untitled with his club until 1968 and therefore entered into transfer talks in the following. A move to Beşiktaş failed because the transfer fee was too high. Shortly afterwards, Galatasaray sought the services of Sipahi. To carry out the transfer, the former Galatasaray player and then club board member Turgan Ece traveled to Ankara and came to an agreement with both Sipahi and his club. At a football player age of 27, which was advanced for the time, Sipahi moved to the club on the European side of Istanbul for the 1968/69 season . In his first season for the Red-Yellows, the 1968/69 season , he was built into the team by coach Tomislav Kaloperović and with this he reached the Turkish championship and thus the first title win of his career. In addition, the Turkish Supercup , then known as the Prime Minister's Cup , was won in the summer of 1969 . In the following season, Sipahi played continuously, but his team ended the season far behind in eighth place in the table and was eliminated early from all other cup competitions. So it was decided to carry out an inspection at the end of the season. To this end, they separated from the coach Kaloperović and agreed instead with the British coach Brian Birch . In addition, the club signed young players such as Metin Kurt , Tuncay Temeller and Aydın Güleş . The new coach formed a powerful squad with the relatively young team that dominated Turkish football for the next five years. The first thing to do was to win the Turkish football championship at the end of the 1970/71 season . With Tuncay Temeller, Ergün Acuner and Ekrem Günalp, Sipahi represented the most successful defense in the league, which allowed only 18 goals against in the entire season. The team won the championship again in the following two seasons , and even the double in the 1972/73 season , making it the first team in Turkish football history to win the Süper Lig championship three times in a row . The following years were rather disappointing for the team and Sipahi. The season 1973/74 ended the team behind expectations, beaten on the 5th place in the table and 1974/75 the club was runner-up with five points difference to the champions Fenerbahçe Istanbul . In the summer of 1976 they were Turkish Cup winners , but finished the league in third place in the table. Sipahi, who had lost his regular place in the last two seasons but was still often used, ended his active football career in the summer of 1975. He said goodbye to the football stage on August 27, 1975 with a farewell game against arch-rivals Fenerbahçe Istanbul.

National team

Sipahi played for the Turkish national team for the first time during his time at Ankara Demirspor on December 16, 1962 in a friendly encounter against the Ethiopian national soccer team . Three days later he played again against Ethiopia in Turkey's second selection. In 1963 he was nominated again for the national team and played the following two years only for the Turkish U-21 national team . In 1965 he took part in the ECO-Cup with the national team and finished second behind Iran. Until his move to Galatasaray in the summer of 1968, he was only nominated for the national team when necessary and only came to sporadic missions. It was only when he switched to the red and yellow that he was one of the constantly nominated players for the national team. With this he took part in the ECO Cup again in 1969 and this time won this tournament with his team. In addition, he took part with the national team in the qualification of the European Football Championship 1972 and the qualification of the Football World Cup 1974 , but could not qualify with his team for any of the tournaments.

He made his last international match on February 25, 1973 during a World Cup 1974 qualifier against the Italian national team .

Coaching career

After his active playing career, he trained as a coach and worked at short notice in the youth department of Galatasaray. He then decided against a career as a coach and later worked as a businessman and football official.
