Ernest de Munck

Pierre Joseph Ernest de Munck (born December 19, 1840 in Brussels , † January 19, 1915 in London ) was a Belgian cellist and composer.

Live and act

Ernest de Munck was a son of the cellist François de Munck (1815-1854), who gave him his first lessons. Already at the age of eight he played regularly in concerts. He was then a student of Adrien-François Servais at the Brussels Conservatory , where he received his diploma (Premier Prix) in 1855. After completing his studies, he spent several years in England, where he gave numerous concerts and taught at the Guildhall School of Music . From 1868 to 1870 he lived and worked in Paris. In 1871 de Munck received the position of first cellist in the court orchestra of Grand Duke Carl Alexander von Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach.

In 1879 he married the soprano Carlotta Patti , with whom he also made numerous appearances. After living in the United States for a few years, the couple settled in London. There de Munck received a professorship at the Royal Academy of Music .

De Munck played an Antonio Stradivari attributed cello, dated 1710, which is still under the name De Munck Stradivarius or de Munck- fireman Stradivarius is known and is currently owned by the Nippon Foundation is located.

Ernest de Munck's few works are mainly works for cello, including his Concerto dramatique , a Duo Souvenir de Spa for cello and piano and several studies.
