society

Köken was born on Heybeliada , an island belonging to Istanbul . He started playing football in 1955 at the age of 18 in the youth department of Galatasaray Istanbul . For the season 1959/60, the second season of the highest Turkish league at all, was Köken by the then coach of the first team from Leandro Remondini recorded in the Squad. Köken made his professional debut on September 26, 1959 in the league game against Gençlerbirliği Ankara . In this game he played the full length of the game. In the further course of the season he was used in eleven other games. His team fought head-to-head for the second Turkish championship this season with arch rivals Fenerbahçe Istanbul and Beşiktaş Istanbul . Towards the end of the season, however, the team lost contact with the two teams and finished the league in 3rd place in the table. In the summer of 1960, Köken and his team took part in the post-seasonal Cemal Gürsel Cup , a cup dedicated to the then Turkish Prime Minister Cemal Gürsel , and finished second behind Fenerbahçe.

For the season 1960/61 season took over with Gündüz Kılıç a former player legend of the club as head coach. In view of such high-quality and seasoned offensive players like Metin Oktay , Suat Mamat , Ahmet Berman , Recep Adanır and Nuri Asan, this coach let young players like Köken and Ayhan Elmastaşoğlu play occasional missions and carefully built them up. This season, the team delivered a head-to-head race for the second Turkish championship with arch-rivals Fenerbahçe for the entire season and only awarded it to the arch-rivals with one point difference on the last day of the match. Benefiting from the departure of star striker Oktay, who moved to the Italian club US Palermo , Köken established himself as a regular player in the 1961/62 season. Over the entire season, his team again fought with Fenerbahçe for the entire season for the Turkish championship and ended the league this time with a four-point lead as champions. This made both Galatasaray and Köken Turkish football champions for the first time . Also in the 1962/63 season , the club succeeded in the Turkish championship and thus the title defense. His team also won the newly introduced Turkish Football Cup this season , becoming the first Turkish cup winner as well as the first Turkish double winner. Köken formed a very successful offensive team with the returning star striker Metin Oktay as well as with Kadri Aytaç , Tarık Kutver , Suat Mamat and Ayhan Elmastaşoğlu, which scored a large part of the 105 league goals. It also managed Kökens team in the 1962-63 European Cup to come to the quarterfinals and reached so the so far best placement of a Turkish team in this competition in particular and in all European club competitions in general. In the quarterfinals, the team failed to AC Milan . Köken scored the only goal of his team in the 1: 3 home defeat.

In the next two seasons, Köken and his team missed defending their title in the league, but won the Turkish Football Cup for the second and third time. As a result, Köken was also part of the team that won the Turkish Football Cup three times in a row for the first time. While Köken was still available to his team for the first half of the 1963/64 season, he was absent from the 1963/64 winter break to the 1965/66 winter break. In the spring of 1964 he began his military service and was therefore only available to his team for the next two years with special permission. In these few exceptions, however, he was only allowed to complete training units or only play games in European competitions and was not allowed to be used in national league and cup matches. In addition, he was allowed to play international matches for the Turkish senior and military national team. After he was fully available to his team again in the spring of 1966 with the end of his military service, he was used again in the starting eleven by head coach Gündüz Kılıç . At the end of the season, the championship was awarded with six points clearly different to arch rivals Beşiktaş, but was able to win the Turkish Football Cup for the fourth time in a row and thus set a record in this competition that is still valid today. In the next season Köken played with his team for a long time for the championship, but the league was finished in 3rd place in the table. In addition, the team was eliminated in the otherwise safe Turkish Football Cup in the quarter-finals against Altay Izmir and ended the season without a title.

After four untitled seasons in the Turkish championship and the overall untitled last season, long-time coach Gündüz Kılıç was replaced by Bülent Eken in the summer of 1967 . With this new coach, the team started the new season by winning the pre-season cup competition of the TSYD Istanbul Cup . Köken kept his regular place under the new coach. After also with this coach the hoped-Turkish league failed to, and the team had an even bigger points spaced from the first and second placed finishes the league on third place in the table and was eliminated in the Turkish Cup in the semi-finals, in 1968 in the summer Tomislav Kaloperovic as Head coach hired. Under this coach, the hoped-for championship succeeded, whereby Köken was able to win this title for the third time. In addition, the team won the President's Cup at the end of the season . Köken contributed one goal in 29 games to this success and was considered one of the most important assists of the goalgetters Metin Oktay . After Oktay ended his career in the summer of 1969 and could no longer act as team captain, Köken was chosen as his successor. Köken himself brought Ayhan Elmastaşoğlu into the conversation as the new captain. In the new season, the team experienced a very turbulent season, in which the coach and some players had several controversies. Several players were temporarily suspended from the team, including Elmastaşoğlu. This also made the possibility that Elmastaşoğlu Köken could replace as team captain superfluous. Köken's team ended the season without a title; The only bright spot was reaching the quarter-finals in the European Cup in 1969/70 .

For the 1970/71 season, the club hired Brian Birch, a new head coach. This coach valued Köken from the start and used him as a regular player in his first season. At the end of the season, the team was able to prevail against arch rivals Fenerbahçe and win the Turkish championship. Together with Metin Kurt and Gökmen Özdenak, Köken formed his team’s storm trio. While Özdenak played on the position of the center forward, Köken acted as usual on his traditional position of the left winger and Kurt on the right winger. In addition, the pre-season TSYD Istanbul Cup was won at the start of the season. Despite this successful season Köken tried together with his teammates Elmastaşoğlu and Talat Özkarslı to leave the club. Köken reached an agreement with arch rival Beşiktaş and asked Galatasaray for clearance. After Galatasaray declared that they would only release Köken for a transfer fee, this change did not take place and so Köken stayed another season with the Red-Yellows. So he completed a game on the first day of the new season for Galatasaray, but was no longer used until December. Then he was regularly set up by Birch in the regular formation and contributed to defending the title in the Turkish championship. After winning the championship, Birch attributed a large share to Köken to this title. About his retired player, Birch said: He is the Bobby Charlton of Turkish football. He played a big part in this year's championship . He's one of the most decent and fairest players I've ever seen. Birch finally moved Köken to continue his career for another year. This last season, Köken was ousted as left winger by Mehmet Özgül and played twelve league games by the end of the season. With his club he won the Turkish Cup as well as the Turkish Championship and was a Turkish double winner for the second time in his career.

On August 30, 1973, he ended his active career with a farewell game in which Galatasaray played in the Mithatpaşa Stadium against Beşiktaş Istanbul. At the end of his career, with 296 first division appearances, he was by far the player who had completed the most first division games for Galatasaray. Only years later did he lose this record to players of the following generations and is currently in 8th place in the list of players with the most premier league appearances for Galatasaray . In addition, with six Turkish championships and four Turkish Cup victories, together with Ayhan Elmastaşoğlu, he was the player with the most title wins in these two competitions for a long time. Elmastaşoğlu won the title in the 1972/73 season without stakes. The title record in the Turkish championship was only broken in the 1990s by players like Bülent Korkmaz , Suat Kaya , Hakan Şükür .

National team

Köken started his national team career in 1959. He was appointed to the squad of the Turkish amateur national team as part of a test match against and made his general international debut in the encounter against Iraq's amateur team. It was in this game that he also scored his first international goal.

In the summer of 1960, Köken was appointed to the Turkish Olympic team and took part in the 1960 Summer Olympics. Here he completed two of his team's three games and scored one goal.

In 1962 he was then appointed by national coach Şeref Görkey as part of a test match against the Ethiopian national team in the squad of the Turkish national team. In this game Köken made his international A debut. From then on he was one of the regularly nominated national players for two years.

After he had not played an international match from October 1963, he was appointed to the tournament line-up of the Turkish A selection for the 1965 RCD Cup in July 1965 . During this tournament he completed two international matches and finished second with his team behind Iran .

His last international match was against Germany on October 12, 1966 . He played a total of twelve times for the Turkish national team.
