Stephan Mielke

Stephan Mielke (* 1969 ) is a German hematologist and oncologist and professor at the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg .

Life

After graduating from high school, Stephan Mielke studied human medicine at the Georg-August University in Göttingen and graduated in 1999 with the medical state examination. In the same year he did his doctorate on the subject of "Analysis of the expression of the C-erbB-2-encoded oncoprotein P185 (HER2-neu) in the placenta and the diagnostic significance of maternal serum levels of the oncoprotein fragment P105 for intact pregnancy". Mielke then worked as an assistant doctor at the University Medical Center in Freiburg , before undertaking a research stay in the field of hematology at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda , USA, from 2004 onwards with a postdoctoral fellowship from the Mildred Scheel Foundation for Cancer Research . In 2007 he returned to Germany and became a senior physician at the University Hospital of Würzburg . In 2009 he completed his habilitation on the subject of "Selective T-cell depletion strategies in allogeneic stem cell transplantation as the basis of a translational, modular transplantation technique with the aim of therapy optimization". Two years later he was appointed director of the Würzburg stem cell transplant program and, in 2014, professor at the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg.

Act

In his research work, Mielke is primarily concerned with the graft-versus-host reaction , a complication of haematopoietic stem cell transplantation . His work has been funded by the German José Carreras Leukemia Foundation , the Wilhelm Sander Foundation and the Interdisciplinary Center for Clinical Research at the University of Würzburg , among others .

Mielke is the European treasurer of the International Society for Cellular Therapy (ISCT) and a member of several professional associations such as the German Society for Hematology and Medical Oncology (DGHO), the American Society of Hematology (ASH) and the European Group for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (EBMT) . He is also on the editorial boards of Bone Marrow Transplantation , the American Journal of Blood Research, and Pharmacogenomics and Personalized Medicine .
