The collaboration is intended to improve logistical and organizational aspects as well as promoting innovations through interdisciplinary collaboration. The participating universities were selected by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) after a call for proposals from 1995. At the IZKF BIOMAT in Aachen, material-tissue interactions in implants and new biomaterials are researched very concentrated. On the basis of tissue engineering and the development of new biocompatible materials, the compatibility of implants and tissue replacement should be improved. It thus occupies a special position - this topic is otherwise only dealt with as one of several in Würzburg. The other centers deal with several characteristic topics in a varying distribution of the projects: On the one hand these are rheumatology , autoimmune diseases and general problems of the immune system . Projects in infection research and research into the immune response to tumors are linked to this. Further topics can then be found in the area of molecular cancer research . A third topic is the area of neurology . Finally, another group of projects is concerned with research into blood circulation and the heart .
