European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation
The European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation ( EBMT ) is a European medical society based in Leiden that deals with hematopoietic stem cell transplantation using peripheral blood , bone marrow or umbilical cord blood .
History and goals
The organization was founded in 1974 and is intended to serve as a platform for the exchange of all doctors and scientists who deal with the subject of the transplantation of hematopoietic stem cells - stem cells that can rebuild the blood-forming system after chemotherapy and / or radiation . The society has grown steadily since then and now also has members outside of Europe. In 2011, the EBMT had 4,045 members from 545 transplant centers in 58 countries worldwide. The company is based in Leiden in the Netherlands .
The organization has defined a motto that should clarify the goal of the society: "The goal should be to save the lives of patients with blood cancer or other life-threatening diseases by advancing the field of blood and bone marrow stem cell transplantation and cell therapy worldwide through science, teaching and the representation of these interests is advanced. "
Annual meeting
The central event is the annual conference, which takes place in a different city in different European countries and is intended to bring together both members and non-members of the EBMT who deal with the topic of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Several thousand scientists take part in the annual conference and exchange views on the latest developments in their fields in various sessions. In addition, various prizes will be presented at the annual conference, including the Van Bekkum Award , which is Europe's most prestigious science award for researchers in this field.
