Öner Kılıç (born May 15, 1954 in Kars ) is a former Turkish football player and coach. Through his many years of work for Galatasaray Istanbul , he is strongly associated with this association. On fan and club pages he is seen as one of the legendary players in club history. During his active time as a football player, he was known by the nickname Arap or Arap Öner (German: Öner der Araber ), a common Turkish name for dark-skinned people.

Player career

Yenimahalle SK and MKE Kırıkkalespor

Kılıç began with club football in the youth department of Yenimahalle SK , a club in the Turkish capital Ankara . In 1968 he was accepted into the professional team here. Already after a year Kılıç took part with his team in the 3rd Futbol Ligi , the then third highest Turkish league. For this club he played until the summer of 1972 and then moved to the region and league rivals MKE Kırıkkalespor . With this club Kılıç managed to finish the Türkiye 3rd Futbol Ligi 1973/74 as champions and to move up to the 2nd Futbol Ligi , the second highest Turkish league at the time.

After his first second division season, several first division clubs tried to commit Kılıç. Galatasaray Istanbul reacted the fastest, kidnapped Kılıç in the summer of 1975 and tried to forestall a commitment by other clubs. Then the team manager of Galatasaray Istanbul negotiated with some club officials for the commitment of Kılıç. After no agreement was reached, Kılıç returned to Kırıkkalespor and played another season for this club.

Galatasaray Istanbul

In the summer of 1976 several clubs tried again for a commitment Kılıç '. Although he had significantly better offers, he accepted the significantly low salary offer from Galatasaray and eventually moved to this club. Galatasaray missed out in the last three championships and before that they won the Turkish championship three times in a row as the first team . After these last three seasons, which were disappointing for the club's management, the decision was made to carry out a revision in the squad and parted ways with some seasoned players, including star striker Metin Kurt . Kılıç replace the left winger Kurt and came to the end of the season on a total of 24 league appearances. His club ended the first season after the revision, the 1976/77 season , again disappointing in 5th place in the table. The club started the new season by winning the TSYD Istanbul Cup, which was played pre-seasonally . This season Kılıç Gökmen Özdenak and Tacettin Ergürsel formed the storm trio of his team. His club retained the chance of the championship until the last match days, but then missed the connection to the top of the table and finished the table in third. Kılıç was with five league goals behind Özdenak the most successful goalscorer of his club and rose to the national team.

After the successful club had missed the Turkish championship in the 1978/79 season , the club signed the new coach Coşkun Özarı in the summer of 1978 . This was commissioned to carry out a revision in the management. As a result of this revision, players like Mehmet Özgül were also sold. This made Kılıç, who could be used in almost every right position in addition to the position of the right winger, as a leading player. The revision had an effect and so Galatasaray delivered a head-to-head race for the Turkish championship with Trabzonspor until the end of the season . On the last day of the match the championship was awarded to Trabzonspor with one point difference despite the best goal difference. Kılıç increased this season's performance from last year and with 7 league goals was again the most successful goalscorer of his club behind Özdenak. In the next season, the 1979/80 season , Galatasaray started again with Özarı. Under this coach, Kılıç kept his regular place at the beginning of this season. This season, Kılıç experienced a very troubled time with his team. After Özarı reached only two draws and three defeats from the first five matchdays, he was replaced by Turgay Şeren . Kılıç remained set under this new coach. His club could not achieve the hoped-for turnaround even under the leadership of the new coach. After these developments, Şeren resigned three days before the end of the season and was replaced by Tamer Kaptan . Under Kaptan's leadership, Kılıç 'team only secured relegation with a 3-0 win on the last day of the game against Çaykur Rizespor . Kılıç injured himself in the encounter of 27th match day against arch rivals Fenerbahçe Istanbul so that he could not be available to his team in the last important games against relegation.

After this difficult season turned Galatasaray for the season 1980/81 with Brian Birch those coaches one with which one could win the Turkish Cup in a row in the first half of 1970 three times. With this coach, Kılıç 'team began to play again for the Turkish championship. He himself was used almost continuously by Birch in the first half of this season. During the winter break, Tamer Kaptan, who now worked as an assistant coach, and Birch did not take him into account in the team planning or participate in training. He only returned to the squad in March and had three league games by the end of the season. His club finished the league third in the table and thus occupied the best placement among the ailing Istanbul team. At the beginning of the season, Kılıç experienced several controversies with Birch. Then Birch suspended him along with Metin Yıldız from the team squad and requested the transfer of these players. About a week later, Birch Kılıç resumed the squad and replaced him in two league games. Birch then suspended him from the squad again at the end of September. Kılıç, who said he was tired of this constant suspension, asked the club to sell it. After this development, several clubs tried to either borrow Kılıç or to oblige including the transfer fee.

In October 1981 he was loaned to the second division club Mersin İdman Yurdu for a sum of 1.5 million Turkish lira . At this club, he immediately established himself as a regular player. With his team he finished the season as a champion of the 1st Futbol Ligi and rose to the 1st Lig . He then returned to Galatasaray for the new season. In the meantime, Birch has been replaced by Özkan Sümer . Also by this coach Kılıç was suspended from the squad with some other teammates. The suspension was lifted after a few weeks. By the end of the season, Kılıç completed 17 league games for his team and scored two goals. In the coming season he strengthened his position within the team again and was used in 32 competitive games.

For the 1983/84 season , Galatasaray hired Jupp Derwall as head coach. This coach carried out a revision in the team squad at the beginning of the season, sorted out some seasoned players and put them on the list of players to be sold or loaned out. Among the sorted out players was Kılıç, who spent this season as a loan player at league rivals Denizlispor . The next season he returned to Galatasaray, only stayed in the team and was used in seven league games. In November 1985 he was loaned to league rivals Kayserispor and spent the rest of the season with this club. The 1st Lig 1986/87 he was kept in the squad at Galatasaray, but played no role in Derwall's squad planning. Only in the league game on April 4, 1987, he came on in the 65th minute and made the last competitive game of his career. His club won the Turkish championship again this season after 14 years . After the season ended, Kılıç finally ended his career. Galatasaray denied him the request for a farewell game, but informed him, in the event of a change, to let him go without a transfer fee.

National team

Kılıç began his international playing career with a use for the Turkish U-21 national team . After another game for the U-21, he was the Turkish national team coach Metin Türel in the squad of the Turkish national team nominated. He then made his international debut in the test match against the GDR national soccer team . By 1980 Kılıç completed two more senior internationals.

Coaching career

Kılıç took over the Istanbul third division club Beykozspor in November 1992 and trained this until the end of the season. In November 1994 he began with Küçükçekmecespor to coach another Istanbul third division club. In January 1999 he began to train Beykozspor one more time and coached it for three months.

Trivia

  • Although Kılıç played as a right winger in a position in which he was exposed to many tackles, he was known as a very fair player. He saw only two yellow cards and one red card in 208 first division games.
  • Since the opening of the new Türk Telekom Arena stadium , under the patronage of the main sponsor, Türk Telekom , Galatasaray Istanbul has been organizing thanksgiving for its legendary players before every home game. On March 31, 2013, during the league match against Istanbul Büyükşehir Belediyespor Kılıç, a plaque of thanks for his many years of service and success was presented.
