The 1st Lig 1977/78 was the 20th season of the top Turkish league in men's football . It began on August 27, 1977 with the game Fenerbahçe Istanbul against Samsunspor , which went 2-1 and ended on May 28, 1978. From January 8, 1978 to February 18, 1978 the season was interrupted by the winter break.

Fenerbahçe Istanbul ended the season as Turkish champions, interrupting Trabzonspor's dominance for one season . This dominated the period from 1975 to 1984 with his great team that is better known as Karadeniz Fırtınası the Turkish football and got the most titles.

For the 1st Lig 1977/78, the two promoted teams from the last second division season have been added to the 14 clubs that remained from the previous season . The climbers were the two second division champions Diyarbakırspor and MKE Ankaragücü . For Diyarbakırspor the rise meant the first first division participation in the club's history, while Ankaragücü managed direct resurgence.
