Önder Mustafaoğlu (born September 14, 1953 in Istanbul , † September 30, 1982 in Gümüşhacıköy ) was a Turkish football player . He was remembered as a home grown man and through his long work for Fenerbahçe Istanbul and is regarded by both fans and clubs as one of the most legendary players. He was part of the Fenerbahçe team that won the Turkish championship and the Turkish Cup for the second time in the club's history in the 1973/74 season , winning the Turkish double .

Player career

society

The beginnings of Mustafaoğlu's career are incompletely documented. According to the earliest source, he played in the youth department of Fenerbahçe Istanbul in the early 1970s and was included in the training camp by the head coach of the professional team Sabri Kiraz during the winter break of the 1971/72 season and used in some preparation games. Mustafaoğlu completed his first competitive game in the game of the Turkish Cup on February 23, 1972 against Balıkesirspor . After this mission, however, he fell ill and was therefore out the rest of the season.

With the 1972/73 season he was back in the team and was used sporadically by the Brazilian head coach Valdir Pereira and came to four competitive appearances. His club finished the season behind arch rivals Galatasaray Istanbul as runner-up, but was able to close the season with two titles with victories in the President's Cup and the Prime Minister's Cup . In the 1973/74 season he was able to start with his team by winning the TSYD Istanbul Cup , which was played pre-seasonally . At the end of the season he and his team won the Turkish championship and also the Turkish Cup . As a result, Mustafaoğlu was part of the Fenerbahçes squad that won the second Turkish double in club history. He himself was often used this season and played 28 competitive games this season.

In the 1974 summer transfer period, Mustafaoğlu agreed to a move to league rivals Adanaspor and canceled the move a little later. In the beginning of July 1974 he finally moved to Adanaspor for a transfer fee of 500,000 Turkish Lira . At this club, he was one of the most important performers from the start and completed at least 21 league games every season in his two-year activity. In his two seasons he achieved 4th place in the table with his team and thus the best first division placement in the club's history. Towards the end of his second season, Mustafaoğlu was given leave of absence from the team squad for reasons that were not discussed in more detail and he decided to hand it over to one of the three major Istanbul clubs at the end of the season.

After two seasons for Adanaspor, Mustafaoğlu wanted to continue his school education, which he continued alongside his professional career, in Istanbul and thus pushed for a return to an Istanbul club. After these developments, Fenerbahçe took up efforts to commit to his home- grown goods and proposed an exchange deal to Adanaspor, in which Zafer Gönculer and Arif Aydın Çelik were offered in return . After both players could not come to an agreement with Adanaspor, the club's management decided against an obligation Mustafaoğlu. After about a week, Fenerbahçe resumed transfer negotiations and signed Mustafaoğlu for a transfer fee of 400,000 lira. In his first season he was used in 25 competitive games and was runner-up with his club. With his second season Mustafaoğlu conquered a regular place and also rose to the Turkish national team player. At the end of the season he and his team were Turkish champions for the second time in his career. The next three seasons Mustafaoğlu's team awarded the championship again to Trabzonspor , instead they won the Turkish Cup once ( 1978/79 ) and the TSYD Istanbul Cup three times (1978/79, 1979/80, 1980/81). Mustafaoğlu lost his regular place in the last of these three seasons and only played twelve league games this season. During the winter break of the season, his head coach Friedel Rausch informed him that he was no longer planning Mustafaoğlu and that he would therefore be on leave until the end of the season. Mustafaoğlu was put on the sales list in the spring of 1981 for a transfer fee of 7 million lira, but found no buyers. His club experienced one of its weakest phases in the club's history last season and even played for relegation. The team only achieved this in the last few days of the match.

After this disappointing season, a revision was carried out in the squad under the direction of Friedel Rausch and several seasoned players were handed over. Instead, in addition to new purchases, the younger players were also established in the team. Mustafaoğlu, who was already offered for sale during the winter break of 1980/81, first negotiated with his old club Adanaspor and then switched to arch-rival Adana Demirspor for a transfer fee of 3 million lira . At this club, he immediately established himself as a regular player and service provider and ended the season with his club in 6th place in the table. He was one of the team of this club that achieved the best first division placement in the club's history.

Despite his successful season at Demirspor, Mustafaoğlu moved to the northern Turkish league rivals Samsunspor after just one season . Here he played for about two months until his unexpected death. His last game as a football player, he played against his old club Fenerbahçe.

National team

Mustafaoğlu's national team career began in May 1974 with a commitment for the Turkish U-21 national team . In all of these missions, Mustafaoğlu was well over 21 years old.

In 1977 he was nominated for the first time and for the squad of the Turkish national team as part of a qualifying game of the 1978 World Cup against the national team of the GDR by national coach Metin Türel and made his international debut in this game.

In total, he completed eight U-21 and A international matches.

death

On the night of September 30, 1982, Mustafaoğlu was killed in a car accident near Gümüşhacıköy . During a drive with his family, his car came off the tram and overturned. Mustafaoğlu was recovered dead from the wrecked car, while his wife and son survived the accident with injuries. He was buried two days later after the midday prayer in Istanbul's Selimiye Mosque in Karacaahmet Cemetery.

Trivia

In the summer of 1979, Mustafaoğlu hit the headlines after being shot and injured by security forces. On the morning of July 23, 1979, at 3:45 a.m. local time, he drove to the beach in Istanbul's Kadıköy district in his car . Here he tried to escape a police check and drove in the opposite direction despite police instructions. A security guard then fired several shots at Mustafaoğlu's car and hit him several times. At the hospital, he explained that the security forces had not seen, but only heard the instruction to stop and was therefore unsettled. He also stated that he was heavily drunk at the time and can hardly remember anything.
