Engin Verel (born September 15, 1956 in Istanbul ) is a former Turkish football player .
Career as a club player
Verel played in his youth with Davutpaşa SK in his native city. In 1973, the 17-year-old Verel moved to the first division club Galatasaray Istanbul . But after two seasons the attacker went to local rivals Fenerbahçe Istanbul . He stayed there for four years. At Fenerbahçe, Verel quickly became a fixture in attack and won the national title in 1978. In the following year, the team secured the National Cup .
In the same year he moved to Hertha BSC in Germany . However, he couldn't prevail and moved to RSC Anderlecht after just one season . In Belgium , Verel won the Belgian championship , but was unable to prevail against the strong competition there and only played three times.
He then signed a contract with OSC Lille in 1981 . In his first season in Ligue 1 , he was able to convince and scored 13 times in 31 games. But already in the following season, Verel could no longer build on his good debut season and only scored two goals. Therefore, he moved again to Fenerbahçe, where he played until his retirement in 1986.
Career as a national player
Engin Verel played five games for the U18 in his country. At the age of 18, he played for the first time for the Turkish U21s , for which he appeared three times. From 1974 to 1982 he was part of the senior national team with an interruption and made 27 appearances there.
