İsmail Demiriz (born April 1, 1962 in Manisa ) is a former Turkish football player and coach. Through his many years of work for Galatasaray Istanbul , he is strongly associated with this association. On the fan and club side he is portrayed as one of the most important players in club history. Due to his nervous-looking style of play in possession of the ball, he was called Titrek İsmail (German: Zappel İsmail o. Zitter İsmail ) when he was playing . Contrary to his nickname, he was known for his safe, controlled and error-free style of play. Other nicknames were Sarı İsmail (German: Blonder İsmail ) and Tarikatci İsmail (German: Order İsmail ). The latter nickname came about because it was said to have connections to various religious orders, including the Nurculuk movement . Since spring 2012 he has been working as a game supervisor for the Turkish national soccer team.

Player career

society

Demiriz started club football in the youth of İzmirspor . For the 1978/79 season he was included in the squad of the professional team playing in the third highest division. At the end of the season one reached the championship of the TFF 2nd Lig and thus direct promotion to the TFF 1st Lig .

For the new season he moved to the Süper Lig promoted Kocaelispor . He stayed here for a few months without having played a game for his new club. In 1980 he returned to İzmirspor and stayed here until the end of the season.

In the summer of 1981 he left İzmirspor again and went to the second division Denizlispor . Here he made the leap into the starting eleven straight away. Thanks to his convincing performance, he also qualified for the Turkish U-21 national team.

At the end of the season he moved within the league and this time played for Göztepe Izmir . Here he played until April 1983 and returned to İzmirspor again. At this club he rose to the national team and then moved to the Süper Lig promoted Gençlerbirliği Ankara . At his new club, he immediately won a regular place and became one of the shooting stars of the season.

Already during the 1983/84 season Galatasaray Istanbul coach Tomislav Ivić expressed the desire to see Demiriz in his team. The transfer came about at the end of the season, but Ivić's contract was not extended. At this point, Galatasaray had lost touch with the other top teams and was more of a follower. After the last championship in the season 1972/73 they tried in vain to build on these successes. For the upcoming season, surprisingly, the resigned national coach Jupp Derwall was signed . He tried to form a new team with young and untrained players. The newly acquired player Demiriz was one of these players. In his first season he played 48 games, including 33 in the Süper Lig, making him the player with the most appearances for Galatasaray. The Turkish football cup was won . In his second season he showed a similarly good record. With the also blonde Semih Yuvakuran , he formed the two defensive wings both at Galatasaray and in the Turkish national team for years. In the 1985/86 season they lost the championship because of the worse goal difference to Beşiktaş Istanbul . The next season the long-awaited success came and they won the championship of the Süper Lig for the first time after 14 years . After this success, Derwall announced his resignation and handed over his coaching position to his assistant coach Mustafa Denizli . This also relied on Demiriz. The following season they won the championship again, this time with a record number of 90 points. To Beşiktaş, second in the table, they achieved a point difference of 12 points. In the 1988/89 season they missed the championship far behind. This caused a sensation on the international stage. At that time it was the rule for Turkish teams to be eliminated in the first two rounds of European Cup competitions. Galatasaray made it to the semi-finals of the 1988/89 European Cup . In terms of the club's history, the second leg against Neuchâtel Xamax in particular is considered legendary. First they lost the first leg 3-0 in the second round. The second leg in Istanbul was sensationally won 5-0 and made it to the quarter-finals of the European Cup . Here you met the reigning French champions AS Monaco . Again, they surprisingly prevailed and were only eliminated in the semi-finals against Steaua Bucharest . Demiriz played the full distance in all matches. Despite these successes, the club's management decided to replace Denizli with the German coach Sigfried Held . This fell far short of expectations and, with a few exceptions, always let Demiriz play. So the club's management reacted again and committed Mustafa Denizli a second time for the 1990/91 season . Demiriz played as usual under Denizli. The championship was awarded to Beşiktaş, but could win the Turkish Football Cup and the Turkish Football Supercup . The next season you could win the Turkish Football Cup again. In the championship they finished third in the table. In the 1991/92 European Cup Winners' Cup , they made it to the quarter-finals and were eliminated from the eventual cup winners Werder Bremen . In the end, the club's management reacted and did not renew the contract with Denizli. Instead, a new coach, Karl-Heinz Feldkamp, was hired . He turned the team upside down according to his own ideas and replaced many seasoned players with young, unknown players. Feldkamp partially waived the services of Demiriz and only let him play over the full distance in three league games and rather switched him on or off. At the end of the season, after winning the championship and the Turkish soccer cup after 1973, the double again succeeded . At the end of the season, Feldkamp announced his resignation and was replaced by his assistant coach Reiner Hollmann . He put Demiriz on the bench at the beginning of the season and waived his services. At the end of the season Demiriz announced the end of his active football career.

National team

Demiriz first played for the Turkish national teams while at İzmirspor. In a friendly game of the Turkish U-18 national team against the U-18 of Bulgaria , he played the full length of the game. In the same year he completed two more games for the Turkish U-18s.

After two and a half years for no other national team level, he was nominated for the Turkish U21 national team due to his convincing performance at Denizlispor in February 1982 and made his debut in this age group on February 16, 1982 against the U21 national team of the USSR .

In April 1983 the then national coach Coşkun Özarı was nominated for the first time in the squad of the Turkish national team as part of a qualifying match for the European Championship 1984 against the German national team , but only sat on the bench in this encounter. At that time he played for the second division Gençlerbirliği Ankara and became one of the first second division players to be nominated for the national team.

He made his debut for the Turkish national team in the next qualifying game on May 11, 1983 against the Albanian national team . In his second national team encounter, he played from the start. In this qualifying game against the Northern Irish national team on October 12, 1983, he managed a sizable run along the right edge of the field. He crowned this run with a respectable cross, which in turn was used by Selçuk Yula with a header to win Turkey 1-0. Northern Ireland had a strong team at that time and, prior to this game, was three points ahead of the German national team and topped the table in qualification group 6 . Due to the defeat against Turkey, they lost the table lead in the upcoming qualifying games and were left behind against Germany. After this game, Demiriz was given a regular place in the national team and for many years was undisputedly in the position of right defender or right wing midfielder .

After the qualification of the European Championship in 1984 , he took with the national team in the qualification of the 1986 FIFA World Cup , qualification of the UEFA EURO 1988 and qualification of the 1990 FIFA World Cup in part. While they were eliminated relatively early in the first three qualifications, they narrowly missed qualifying for the 1990 World Cup. In the games against the Austrian national team, with a 3-2 away defeat and a 3-0 home win, they were the superior side, but with unnecessary point losses such as a home defeat against the Icelandic national team , two points behind Austria, the third party Place in the table and so missed the qualification.

Demiriz completed a total of 27 international matches.

Coaching career

After his active career as a player, he took over the head coach position of the then third division Kasımpaşa Istanbul in 1995 and looked after this club for about a season. He then worked for one season as a youth coach at Nişantaşıspor .

From the summer of 1998 he assisted the head coach Ahmet Akcan at Karabükspor . Akcan worked for Galatasaray for years as an assistant coach and looked after Demiriz during his playing time at this club. During the 1999 season he worked with his former teammate Uğur Tütüneker as his assistant coach at the third division side Siirtspor .
