Kurtuluş SK is a sports club of the Greek minority from Kurtuluş in the Şişli district of Istanbul city in Turkey . It is the oldest sports club in Turkey that still exists today.

history

Kurtuluş SK was founded by local Greeks on January 1st, 1896 under the name İraklis Jimnastik Kulübü . It was the most important Greek sports club in Istanbul after Peraspor , also because it was involved in the organization of the Pan-Constantinopolitan Games (games organized among the Greek clubs in the city) from 1910 to 1922 .

In 1906 two athletes of the club, the brothers Georgios and Nikolaos Alimbrandis, won two gold medals at the Olympic Intermediate Games of 1906 in Athens, each in horizontal stretching and high rope climbing. Until the persecution of the Greeks in the Ottoman Empire in 1914–1923 , the club was one of the strongest in the entire capital of the Ottoman Empire .

During the 1930s, departments for basketball, volleyball, cycling, track and field, and other sports were established. Athletes from these club branches took part in local and international sporting events.
