Melih Kotanca (* 1915 in Karesi ; † June 8, 1986 in Istanbul ) was a Turkish football player and athlete .

Athlete career

He started his football career in Balıkesir and was transferred to the strongest clubs " Ateş-Güneş " (founded in 1933 and dissolved in 1938) at the time in 1935 . Here he had played a major role with his goals as a goal scorer in the championships of the İstanbul Futbol Ligi in the 1937/38 season and in the Millî Küme in the 1938 season.

After the club "Ateş-Güneş" broke up at the end of the season, Melih Kotanca was committed by Fenerbahçe.

He played 184 games for Fenerbahçe from 1939 to 1947 and scored 214 goals. Kotanca won the "İstanbul Ligi", "Millî Küme" -, "Türkiye Şampiyonası" championships and the "Başbakanlık Kupası", "İstanbul Şildi" and "Istanbul Kupası" cup competitions at Fenerbahçe.

Due to the Second World War, he did not have the opportunity to play a game for the Turkish national football team . He was able to fulfill his longing for the national team by running up as a Turkish athlete and celebrating great successes. In 1936 he started his athletics career at the "Ateş-Güneş" club and competed in 100 m, 200 m, 400 m runs, 400 m hurdles, javelin, the modern pentathlon (Pentathlon) and decathlon (Dekathlon). In the same year he was nominated for the national athletics team of Turkey and won the gold medal in the Balkan championship in the 400 m run.

He continued his success in athletics at the still largest sports club in Turkey, Fenerbahçe SK , and also played a major role in the other athletics championships "Istanbul Kupası" and "Gül Kupası". In 1940 Kotanca won two gold medals for the Turkish national athletics team in the 200 m and 400 m run of the Balkan Championship. Furthermore, he ran in the same championship in the 4 × 100 m relay race as the last athlete and overtook his competitor from Greece, who was 15 m ahead of Kotanca, 1 m before the finish line and again won gold for the national athletics team of Turkey .

After Melih Kotanca won 3 gold medals in the “Gül Kupası” track and field championship in the morning under the “Fenerbahçe” sports club, he then played against the Turkish soccer club “Vefa Spor Kulübü” in the afternoon and scored three goals. In addition, Kotanca won the 14-0 win against the football club "Topkapıspor" on February 25, 1940, where he scored eight goals, the award "most goals a Fenerbahçe football player in a game" and he shares it with Zeki Rıza Sporel .
