Yusuf Tunaoğlu (* 1946 in Istanbul , Turkey ; † July 22, 2000 in Kuşadası , Aydın ) was a Turkish football player . He was one of the most talented players in Turkish football. Tunaoğlu, who shot equally with both feet, combined the strengths in the form of high speed, dribbling and acceleration, which are atypical for a playmaker, with a pronounced scoring risk.

Career

After the top performers Şenol Birol and Birol Pekel moved to arch rivals Fenerbahçe Istanbul in 1962 , Yusuf Tunaoğlu came from his own youth with Sanlı Sarıalioğlu in the 1st team of Beşiktaş Istanbul . In the 1962/63 season, when he was only 17, he prevailed against his teammates and played more and more in the first team. The then coach of Besiktas Istanbul, Hakkı Yeten , described him as the greatest talent in Turkish football. In 1965, at a tournament in Belgium , the offensive player attracted attention when he performed well. After the tournament, Yusuf received an offer from RSC Anderlecht . Both clubs, Beşiktaş Istanbul and RSC Anderlecht, agreed on the transfer fee and he signed a contract. However, the contract was terminated when Yusuf Tunaoğlu had a serious drunk driving accident on the Bosporus shortly before the flight to Belgium . With Besiktas Istanbul he won two championships, once the Cumhurbaşkanlıği Kupası . Between 1962 and 1976 he played 172 Süper Lig games and scored 23 goals. Due to his alcoholism he was denied a great career. In 1974 he had to leave Beşiktaş Istanbul because the board was of the opinion that he was causing unrest in the team. Eventually he was loaned to Altay İzmir . In the 1973/74 season Yusuf played an outstanding season at Altay İzmir and put in the game against his home club Besiktas Istanbul Inönü Stadium in shock when he played off the entire Beşiktaş defense and shot the ball. The game ended 0-1 for Altay Izmir. After the season, Beşiktaş decided to bring him back. After the 1975/76 season he ended his career at the age of only 30. After his active career, he coached the various youth teams of Beşiktaş Istanbul and became part of the club's infrastructure.

National team

Tunaoğlu was on the ball six times for Turkey . Before that, he played in Turkey's junior national teams. With the U18, Tunaoğlu took part in a UEFA junior tournament in 1964 , the forerunner of what would later become the European Championship. In the course of the tournament he scored a goal, and the team was eliminated 0: 1 against later finalists Spain. Soon afterwards, on November 1, 1964, the offensive player made his debut in the A-Elf. In the friendly against Tunisia , the then youngster was in the starting line-up for Turkey and played through in a 4-1 win. One of his greatest successes with the national selection is winning the ECO Cup in 1969 . Tunaoğlu only came to a short stint when he was allowed to play in the 4-0 win against Iran . Tunaoğlu played his last game in the European Championship qualifier on September 22, 1971 against Poland .

After the active career

His way of life left him depressed, which led to obesity. Both of these led to the fact that he no longer played for big clubs. His weakness for women and Istanbul's nightlife meant that he fell more and more into alcoholism , which had a lasting negative impact on his career and ultimately led to his untimely death at the age of only 54. He died on July 22nd, 2000 in a hotel in Kuşadası, completely impoverished from a heart attack .
