In the run-up, national coach Mustafa Denizli invited 27 players to his provisional squad, including defenders Mert Korkmaz (Gaziantepspor) and Emre Aşık (Istanbulspor) as well as midfielder Ümit Bozkurt (Denizlispor) and the two injured Galatasaray players Bülent Korkzoğ and Emre Belmöğ sorted out.

The first quarter-final game was an even game in the first half. The Turks acted out of a well-organized defense. Only the red card against Alpay Özalan in the 29th minute brought the Turks out of their concept. When Arif Erdem missed a penalty in the 45th minute, the Portuguese became more decisive in the second half and won with two goals from their new striker Nuno Gomes .
