Mert Zeki Korkmaz (born August 16, 1971 in Istanbul ) is a former Turkish football player and coach.
Player career
society
The 1.88 m tall former central defender is the younger brother of the very successful soccer player Bülent Korkmaz . Both graduated from all youth areas of the traditional Turkish club Galatasaray SK and were then nominated for the professional squad. In contrast to his brother, Mert was unable to establish himself with the club in the long term and so he switched to the former league competitor Kocaelispor . At the beginning of the 1998/99 season, another move to Gaziantepspor followed . After three years at Malatyaspor , he finally switched to the Istanbul club Belediyespor in 2006/07 . With them, he was promoted to the Turkcell Süper Lig again in the first year . After another year, he ended his active career there at the end of the 2007/08 season.
National team
Furthermore, Mert Krokmaz had five appearances in the Turkish senior team and seven for Turkey's U21 team .
Coaching career
Immediately after the end of his active career, Mert Korkmaz took over an assistant coach position at his last club at the beginning of the new season. He stayed there for a year and then also moved to Kocaelispor as an assistant coach.
Since 2011 he has been working as an assistant coach with his former teammate Uğur Tütüneker . With this he looked after the second division Kasımpaşa Istanbul and then from the same league Torku Konyaspor . With the latter, the coaching team achieved the playoff victory of the TFF 1st Lig and thus the promotion to the Süper Lig .
In January 2014 he took over a club as head coach for the first time in his coaching career with third division club Yeni Malatyaspor . After just two months, he resigned from his position.
