Tugay Kerimoğlu (born August 24, 1970 in Trabzon ) is a former Turkish football player and current coach . Through his many years of work for Galatasaray Istanbul and as a home grown man, he is strongly associated with this club. On fan and club pages he is seen as one of the most important players in club history.

Family and childhood

Kerimoğlu was born in the north-east Turkish port city of Trabzon as the son of a bank director and a housewife. His father Özkan Kerimoğlu was also active as a professional footballer and played for the clubs Trabzon İdmanocağı , one of the four predecessor clubs of Trabzonspor , Vefa Istanbul and Adalet SK . His father encouraged his two sons to play football from an early age. So Kerimoğlu and before him his older brother Tolgay Kerimoğlu began in the youth department of Trabzonspor with the club football. When Tugay was 12 years old, his older brother, who at that time was already playing in the Trabzonspors youth division, took his younger brother to a selection tournament for the youth division. Here he immediately liked Sadi Tekelioğlu , the then head of the Trabzonspors youth department and, like his older brother, was accepted into the youth department. After the family had to move to Istanbul because of his father's work in 1984 , Kerimoğlu did a trial training at Beşiktaş Istanbul, after which he was not accepted into the youth department. With the help of Ergun Gürsoy , who is also from Trabzon, he switched to the youth department of Galatasaray Istanbul .

Player career

Club soccer

Kerimoğlu was discovered in 1984 by Ergun Gürsoy, the then board member, and brought into the youth of the traditional Turkish club Galatasaray Istanbul . There he played until 1987. From then on he was part of the professional squad under Jupp Derwall . Tugay Kerimoğlu shone with his excellent technique, his "eye for the teammate" and his game intelligence.

In his twelve years with the Red-Yellows he played numerous national and international games. He made a significant contribution to Galatasaray's international successes in the 1990s, as well as winning the UEFA Cup . He played 52 European Cup games for Galatasaray Istanbul.

After moving to the Glasgow Rangers in January 2000, Kerimoğlu was Scottish champions and cup winners with the team the following year. In July 2001, Graeme Souness , his former club coach at Galatasaray, brought him to Blackburn Rovers for just under four million euros . He was active there until 2009. With the Rovers he won the League Cup in 2002 .

In 2009 he ended his career after 22 years of professional football.

National team

Kerimoğlu made 94 international appearances and scored eight goals for Turkey . In 2007 he resigned from the national team. He was a record international at the time he announced his retirement.

Kerimoğlu took part in the 1996 European Football Championship in England and the 2000 European Championship in Belgium and the Netherlands . At the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea , Kerimoğlu was one of the key players on the Turkish teams. His greatest success with the Turkey national team was third place at the 2002 World Cup.

In early 2007 he was nominated again for the national team for the game against Georgia .

On June 5, 2007, Tugay Kerimoğlu played his farewell game in Dortmund against Brazil in the Turkish national team. It was his 94th and last mission.

Coaching career

After his playing career, Kerimoğlu returned to Turkey. In March 2010 he became director of the youth department of Galatasaray Istanbul . From October 2010 he was assistant coach at Galatasaray Istanbul; his contract ended in May 2012.

In November 2015, he took over the Turkish second division club Şanlıurfaspor and thus worked as head coach for the first time. After a lack of success, he terminated his contract in April 2016 after mutual agreement with the club.
